초록

전쟁은 이미지로 기록 되는가, 아니면 전쟁은 이미지를 통해 설명되는가? 세계 1차대전은 전례에 없던 인명살상(殺傷)률을 기록하는 무력의 갈등상태로 간주된다. 이러한역사적 참상에 큰 역할을 한 것은 참호전이며, 여기엔 다시금 화학무기(독가스)와 기관총 등 새로운 무기를 생산하게 한 참호에 의한 전쟁전략이 그 원인 이었음이 강조된다.
100여 년이 지난 현재, 역사적 과거의 이러한 참혹한 참상들은 사진 이미지들에 의해보다 직접적으로 설명되어 진다. 여기엔 사진이라는 매체가 지닌 특성 중, 현실을 그대로 기록하 듯 재현한 것처럼 보이는 사실적 현상이 자리한다. 그래서 그 어떤 시각적결과물 보다 현실성을 더 반영한 것처럼 여겨진다. 하지만 사진은 현실을 재현하지 않는다. 기록하지도 않는다. 다만, 어떤 시간과 공간 속에서 일어났던 사건과 상황에 대한유추와 재구성을 도모하게 할 뿐이다.
이것은 사진 만이 아니라, 시각화된 모든 상태 즉 이미지화 된 모든 존재가 지니는특성이다. 본 연구의 핵심은 바로 이러한 이미지의 존재적 특성에 대한 재고찰에 있다.
본 연구는 가시화 된 모든 상태에 있는 대상물들을 이미지로 정의 내리는 미술사적방법론의 한 과정에서 영글어진 결과물이다. 이미지는 다른 것으로 대체될 수 없다.
또한 이미지는 그 자체가 아니고서는 설명해 낼 수 없는 사실적 요소로, 실질적인 시각적 증명을 이루어 낸다. 이것은 이미지의 기능에 속한다. 이에 의해 이미지는 과거의 사건 즉 전쟁과 같은 상황을 기록하거나 단순히 상황을 시각적으로 재현해 내는 것이 아니라, 당시 상황을 재구성하게 하며 이를 통해 참사 혹은 전쟁을 설명하며 그 의미를 시대사적으로 해석하게 하는 대상물로 고찰하게 한다.
위의 사실을 바탕으로, 본 연구는 과거를 연구하는 학문인 ‘역사학’과 이미지를 연구하는 ‘미술사’와의 학술적 연구의 접점관계를 조명한다. 이미지 즉 시각적 자료는 역사학을 위한 연구대상물 자체가 아니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이미지는 역사연구를 위한주요한 시각자료로 간주되며, 조사연구를 위해 다양한 의미부여를 받는다. 이는 19세기 현대 역사학의 출현 이 후의 결과이다. 그림과 조각, 기념물, 건축물 그리고 사진과필름 등의 다양한 시각적 자료들은 과거를 연구하는 역사학에서 의미 있는 연구 자료및 출처로서 지난 시간 속에서 일어난 인간사의 사건과 정황들을 요약하고 개념화 해내는 역사연구와 조사 방법에 중요한 의미로 간주된다. 이미지가 역사학적 정보력을지니는 주요한 자료인 사실에 착안하여, 역사학과의 불가분의 관계를 이루는 근본적인배경에 이미지의 직접적인 전달력과 대체될 수 없는 그 힘에 대한 고찰을 이루는 본연구는, 이미지를 통한 정보지식 전달의 가능성에 대한 제시가 될 것이다. 또한 이는이미지에 잠재된 가능성에 대한 고찰인 동시에, 국제적으로 학제간의 융합을 도모하는“이미지 학(Image, Knowledge, Gestaltung – Bildwissenschaft)" 연구에 대한 의미부여 일 것이다.

영어초록

Is war documented by images or is war explained and reconstructed by images? The First World War is considered an armed conflict which brought casualties and destruction to a hitherto unknown level. Trench warfare in conjunction with the newly invented machine gun and the first time use of chemical agents as weapons of mass destruction are mainly responsible for this terrible devastation. Our perception and notion of this war is widely influenced by photographs which were made in large numbers by all participating war parties. The terrible devastation is more directly mediated by photography than by any other visual materials. Due to the characteristics of the medium of photography, it seems to represent reality as a factual phenomenon. Therefore, it seems that images by photos are reflecting the reality more than other media and intended for representation. But photographic images are no reproduction of reality nor do they document reality. However, images allow analogies and reconstructions of situations and provide substantial information of past times.
These characteristics are not only for photographs but also for all visualized material. Images are not replaceable and exchangeable. The core of this paper is an investigation into reconsidering and rethinking the characteristics of imagery. Images of past events or situations do not reproduce or document scenes, but help visually to reconstruct past times. Thereby wars or disaster can be interpreted and explained and at the same time images will become more important objects for contemporary historical interpretation.
This study attempts to highlight crossroads in Historical Studies and Art History. Images are not objects themselves of Historical Studies, nevertheless, images are regarded as important visual materials for historical research since the emergence of modern historical research in the nineteenth century. The large variety of visual materials such as paintings, sculptures, monuments, architectures and also photos and films constitute irreplaceable sources for historical research. Due to the significance of visual materials as historical information this article discloses the power of images, their inherent immediacy and irreplaceability. This essay tries to give an understanding of the possibilities of mediation of knowledge and information through images. The aspect of yet latent and undetected possibilities of images allows a gaining of international importance to Bildwissenschaft (Image Knowledge Gestaltung; Visual Studies) as an interdisciplinary research topic in art history.
