감정의 산물, 근대 초기 아시아 담론에 투사된 증오의 연쇄 ―고테라 겐키치(小寺謙吉)와 쑨원(孫文)의 아시아주의를 중심으로 (Result of Emotional, a Hateful Chain in the Early 20th Asianis ―Focusing on Kodera Kenkichi and Sun Yat-sen’s Asianism―)

초록

본고는 20세기 초 아시아 지역의 아시아주의 및 아시아 담론을 고찰한 것이다. 기존의 아시아주의에 관한 연구는 지연관계와 정치적 의미에 중점을 두었으나, 본고는 ‘증오’라는 감정에 입각하여 아시아주의에 대해 재고한다. 증오는 인류가 품고 있는 기본적인 감정의 하나로, 사회 환경 또는 국가적 분위기 조성에 큰 역할을 담당한다. 20세기 초 아시아는 침략-피침략, 식민-피식민이라는 분위기가 만연했으며, 서양의 제국주의는 ‘가해자’로서 아시아 지역을 끊임없이 자극해왔다. 이 같은 ‘가해’와 ‘피해’의 구조 속에서 자연스럽게 ‘악인’이나 ‘악행’에 대한 증오라는 감정이 발생하게 되었고, 이는 당시 아시아주의에서 핵심적인 감정으로 작용했다고 볼 수 있다. 아시아주의는 바로 증오라는 감정을 기초로 삼고 있으며, 서양의 제국주의 체제와 인종주의에 대한 반발을 표현하는 한편, 아시아의 연대를 강조하고 서양에 저항하는 사상 이데올로기이다.
근대 초기 아시아 지역 관계가 서양의 침략으로 인해 매우 복잡하게 엮이면서 아시아주의에는 아시아의 내부적 증오도 함께 투사되었다. 아시아주의에 투사된 증오의 감정은 서양에서부터 아시아의 내부로까지 연속적으로 이어지는데, 이것이 바로 증오의 연쇄라고 할 수 있다. 본고는 아시아주의에 투사된 증오와 증오의 연쇄를 재고함으로써 아시아주의의 양상, 성질, 그리고 아시아의 지역 관계를 새롭게 분석하고자 한다.

영어초록

This essay focuses on the hateful sentiments projected by Asianism, as well as the hateful domino effect that Asianism has had both between East and West, and within Asia. The most fundamental human emotion is hatred, which is created by external stimuli. Due to Western invasion, the pattern of Asia was altered in the early 20th century, resulting in regional and ethnic divisions that cause hatred. Asianism reflects this hatred. The focus of Asianism was on Asia’s need to resist Western aggression and recast its influence. However, the region’s aversion to Western encroachment is the emotional driving force for resistance and reshaping Asia.
First and foremost, hatred in Asianism is expressed as a dislike of racism in the West. The Yellow Peril was a form of racism that was prevalent at the time in Western society, and it involved prejudice and hatred towards people of color. Asianism by Kodera Kenkichi and Sun Yat-sen demonstrated their distaste for this form of racism. This is an antagonism against racism in the West. This animosity started in the West and spread to the East, creating a chain of hatred. The hatred that yellow people have for white people as a result of Western aggression is a form of resistance to racism and Western aggression.
Furthermore, hatred does not only exist between the East and the West. Due to the complexity of the Asian pattern in the early modern era, there was internal colonization as well as internal conflict. A chain of hatred has also resulted from this Asian tendency. Sun Yat-sen’s Asianism demonstrates his distaste for the violence that Kodera Kenkichi’s Asianism. The Asianism that South Korea and China at the time also detested aggression. The nationalism expressed in Sun Yat-sen’s Asianism was challenged by Koreans at the time because they valued peace and equality in Asia. While there are similarities across the various Asianisms in Asia, the ideology inside each country’s Asianism varied due to the unique context of that era, which led to a series of disputes and animosity.
As a result, this research demonstrates the richness and complexity of Greater Asianism. It also illustrates the complicated historical ties that existed between Asian nations.
