호랑이 퇴치담의 신화성과 여성주의적 접근 - ‘음란한 짓으로 맹수 놀라 도망가게 하기’ 유형을 중심으로 (The mythological character of and a feminism approach to the tiger Tale - Focusing on Type of ‘Expelling Fierce Animals by Frightening them though Lecheries’)

초록

‘음란한 짓으로 맹수 놀라 도망가게 하기(336-4)’ 유형은 평범한 남자 혹은 여자가 옷을 벗고 성기를 내보여 호랑이를 속여 쫓았다는 줄거리를 지닌 설화이다. 이 논문은 이 유형을 대상으로 민속학․인류학적 관점과 여성주의적 관점에서 분석한 것이다. 성기 화소와 인물의 행위를 중심으로 설화에 나타난 신화적 맥락과 가부장제 사회의 젠더 주체가 구성되는 방식에 대해 살펴보았다.
분석을 위한 첫 번째 작업으로 유화(variant) 목록을 정리하여 서사구조를 분석하고 유형을 분류하였다. 그리하여 모티핌(motifeme)의 배열과 호랑이 퇴치 주체를 고려하여 자력형(自力型), 협력형(協力型), 모방형(模倣型)으로 하위유형을 세분화하였다. 자력형은 다시 남성담과 여성담으로 나뉜다.
두 번째는 이 설화가 성기 숭배 신앙과 창세신화, 영웅신화, 무속신화 등에 나타난 다양한 신화적 요소들을 반영하여 생성된 것으로 보고 인물의 속성과 서사구조를 중심으로 신화와 공유하는 특성을 살펴보았다. 가장 활발히 전승되는 여성담을 중심으로 살핀 결과, 호랑이를 퇴치한 여성은 신화 주인공처럼 속임수와 변신의 술수를 부릴 줄 아는 인물로서 자신의 몸(성기)에 깃든 생명력으로 사회를 재생시키는 여신적 능력을 지니고 있음을 밝혔다. 그리고 여성이 호랑이를 퇴치하는 과정을 영웅적 인물의 통과의례(입문의례)로 보았으며 바리데기와 당금애기 등 여성영웅의 통과의례에 나타나는 희생적 성격도 공유하고 있음을 확인하였다. 여기서의 호랑이는 기존의 질서를 파괴하는 존재로 안정된 질서의 재편을 위해 퇴치되어야만 하는 ‘부정(不淨)’의 의미를 지닌다.
세 번째는 하위유형의 서사를 검토하여, 가부장제 이데올로기를 담지하는 이 설화의 주체 구성 방식에 주목하였다. 먼저 성기를 중심으로 차별적으로 구성되는 남/녀의 서사를 가부장제 이데올로기의 호명(interpellation)에 따른 남성과 여성의 주체화(subjectivation) 과정으로 전제하였다. 이때 주체화 과정에 개입하는 호랑이는 주체를 호명하는 ‘권력’이자 ‘가부장적인 팔루스(phallus)’가 된다. 분석 결과, 가부장적 이데올로기 속 남성과 여성 주체들은 호명과 구별짓기, 남성주체화와 여성혐오, 표준과 비표준의 경계짓기라는 틀(전략)에 따라 남성지배 체제 유지에 적합한 몸으로서 생산되고 있었다. 이러한 젠더화 방식은 생물학적 본질론과 성차별, 남성 보편주의에 의거하고 있어 문제가 된다. 더욱 문제가 되는 것은 이 설화를 음담, 우스갯소리로 즐기면서 설화에 전제되어 있는 젠더 관념이나 여성 혐오의 논리를 자연화한다는 것이다. 무비판적이고 무의식적인 연행은 여성 억압과 여성 종속을 정당화하는 담론으로 기능할 수 있으며 남성지배 이데올로기를 관철하는 헤게모니 도구가 될 수 있다. 이것이 이 설화를 여성주의적 시각에서 읽어야 하는 핵심적 이유이다.
이 논문은 그간 학계에서 주목받지 못했던 이 유형을 연구대상에 포함시킴으로써 자료를 확장하고 새로운 독법을 시도하였다는 데서 의의를 찾을 수 있을 것으로 생각된다.

영어초록

The type of ‘Expelling Fierce Animals by Frightening them though Lecheries’ is a tale with the plot in which an ordinary male or female deceives and expels a tiger by taking off his/her clothes and showing his/her sexual organs to it. This paper examines this type from the perspectives of folklore, anthropology and feminism. It investigated the mythical context appearing in the tales and analyzed how gender subjects are organized in the patriarchal society.
First, it analyzed the narrative structures by arranging the list of variants and categorized the types. Then, it sub-categorized the types into self-sufficiency, cooperation and imitation, by considering the arrangement of motifeme and the subjects expelling a tiger. The sub-type of self-sufficiency is again divided into male's and female's tales.
Second, it recognized that this tale was produced by reflecting a variety of mythological factors appearing in sexual organ worship, and creating, heroic and shaman myths, etc. and examined its characteristics shared by myths around characters' traits and the narrative structures. The female tales which has been most actively transmitted was examined to show that females who expel a tiger, the characters who can use tricks and metamorphic conjury, like mythological heroines, have goddesses' ability to regenerate homes/ societies by using vitality with which their bodies (vagina) are filled. This study also regarded the process in which a female expels a tiger as the rite of passage (the entrance ritual) of heroic characters and also found that it shares the sacrificial character appearing in heroines' rite of passage, such as Baridegi and Danggeumaegi. Here, the tiger which destructs the existing order has a filthy meaning that should be subdued to reorganize the stable order.
Third, it focused on how the subject construction is achieved by this tale containing the patriarchy ideology by reviewing the sub- types of narratives. The male/female narratives discriminately constructed around sexual organs was initially premised on the proses in which males and females are subjectivized according to the naming of the patriarchy ideology. The tiger which intervenes in the subjectivization process of male/female was interpreted as the ‘power’ and ‘patriarchy phallus’ naming the subject. The results of the analysis showed that male and female subjects in the patriarchy ideology were produced as the bodies suitable for maintaining the male-dominated system based on the framework(strategy) making boundaries between naming and distinction, between male and female subjects, and between standard and non-standard. Such a gendering method is problematic, in that it is based on a biological essential theory, sexual discrimination and male-universalism. More serious problem is that this tale is enjoyed as an obscene and a joke, while the gender idea or the logic of misogyny, the premises of it are naturalized. Uncritical and unconscious speech and behavior can function as discourses justifying both female oppression and subordination and can be hegemony tools used for persisting the ideology of male domination. This is a key reason why this tale should be read from the feminist view. This paper is thought to have an implication, in that it extends the relevant data and tries a new reading, by including the type which has not attracted attention from academic circles as an object of research.
