초록

본 논문은 스리랑카의 뛰어난 불교학자인 말라라세케라(G.P. Malalasekara) 와 자야틸레케(K.N. Jayatilleke)의 학문을 탐구한다. 오늘날 스리랑카의 빨리⋅ 불교학(Pāli and Buddhist Studies)은 문헌학적 연구와 철학적 연구라는 두 범주로 크게 나눌 수 있다. 말라라세케라는 문헌학적 연구의 아버지로, 자야틸레케는 철학적 연구의 아버지로 각각 간주될 만큼 빨리⋅불교학에 기여한 그들의 공헌은 더할 나위 없이 크다. 말라라세케라는 많은 분야에서 활동한 다재다능한 인물이었다. 문헌학적 연구에서 그의 업적은 『빨리어 고유명사 사전(Dictionary of Pāli Proper Names)』의 편찬과 『불교백과사전(Encyclopaedia of Buddhism)』의 초대 편집장에서 잘 드러난다. 하지만 그의 업적은 비단 학계에만 국한되지 않는다. 왜냐하면 그는 교육가, 종교⋅사회적 지도자, 심지어 외교관과 같은 다른 분야에서도 두각을 나타냈기 때문이다. 이와 같이 그는 학문과 활동을 동일하게 결합하였다. 학계에 대한 자야틸레케의 공헌은 주로 불교철학에 새로운 접근을 시도했으며 당대 철학적 논점들과 현대인의 문제들에대한 불교 철학의 관련성을 지적하는 데 집중되어 있다. 자야틸레케의 역작이자 기념비적인 저서인 『초기 불교의 지식론(Early Buddhist Theory of Knowledge)』 에서 그는 초기 불교가 그 지식론에서 경험주의라는 점을 설득력 있게 논증하고 있다. 자야틸레케는 일반 대중뿐만 아니라 학자들도 불교가 단지 종교나신앙이나 신념으로서 가치가 있을 뿐만 아니라 철학과 현대 과학의 최고 업적이라는 측면에서 가치가 있는 도전적인 사상 체계임을 납득시키려고 노력했다. 비록 두 학자들의 학문적 방법은 달랐지만 모두 당시 사회적 이슈들에남다른 관심을 보였다는 점에서 이들의 지향점은 기본적으로 같았다고 할 수있다. 그들은 공통적으로 불교학이 불교학만을 위한 것이 아니라 열반(涅槃, nibbāna)을 추구하는 사람들을 자극할 때만이 비로소 그 진정한 생명력과 구원론적인 의미를 얻는다고 보았다. 그들은 앞으로도 세계의 빨리⋅불교학에기여한 점을 높이 평가하는 불교학자들과 일반 대중들의 마음속에 영원히 살아 숨 쉴 것이다

This paper surveys the scholarship of two outstanding Buddhist scholars, G.P. Malalasekera and K.N. Jayatilleke. Today’s Pāli and Buddhist studies in Sri Lanka may roughly be classified into two categories: philological studies and philosophical studies. G.P. Malalasekera and K.N.
Jayatilleke’s contributions to Pāli and Buddhist studies are quite crucial because they are considered the fathers of these two fields of Buddhist studies in Sri Lanka. G.P. Malalasekera’s achievements in the field of philological studies is best demonstrated as the compiler of the Dictionary of Pāli Proper Names and the founding editor-in-chief of the Encyclopaedia of Buddhism. However, his achievements were not confined to the realm of academia, for his career was distinguished in several other notable aspects: as educator, religious and social leader and even diplomat. In this way, he combined activism with scholarship in equal measure. K.N. Jayatilleke’s contributions to scholarship center on his having initiated a new approach to the study of Buddhist philosophy and his having attempted to point out the relevance of the philosophy of the Buddha in contemporary philosophical controversies and the problems of modern man. In his monumental work, Early Buddhist Theory of Knowledge, he convincingly argued that Early Buddhism was empirical in its theory of knowledge. He took great pains to convince the academic community as well as the general public that Buddhism can be valued not only as a religion, a faith or a creed but also as a challenging system of thought that could be valued from the perspectives of the highest achievements of the human intellect in philosophy and modern science. Although their scholastic methodologies were different, they were basically on the same level in the sense that they evinced a lively interest in public issues of the day. For them, Buddhist scholarship was not for its own sake. Only if Buddhist scholarship becomes an incentive for those who aspire to Nibbāna can it obtain true vitality and soteriological significance. These two giants will be ever remembered by Buddhist scholars and the general public who appreciate their contributions to Pāli and Buddhist studies.
