한설야의 『대륙』을 새롭게 독해하는 두 가지 방법 -독자층과 매체 서사 전략을 중심으로- (Two New Methods for Reading Han Seol-ya’s 『Continent』 -Focusing on Readers and Media Narrative Strategies-)

초록

한설야의 『대륙』은 1939년, 『국민신보』에 연재된 일본어 소설이다. 오야마와 하야시라는 인물이 주체로서 만주 공간을 개척해나가는 성장의 과정과, 오야마와 조마려가 사랑을 완성해가는 과정을 주된 플롯으로 하고 있다. 그간 한설야의 『대륙』은 친일과 반일이라는 대립된 관점으로 평가받아 왔다. 이 연구는 한설야의 『대륙』 연구에서 언급되지 않은 주요 독자층의 측면, 매체 서사 전략의 측면에서 『대륙』을 새롭게 독해하는 시도의 연구이다. 한설야의 『대륙』은 태생적으로 신문이라는 매체를 통해 생산되고 유통된 소설인 만큼, 매체와 긴요한 연관성을 가진 채 매체 전략을 추구할 수밖에 없기 때문이다.
따라서 이 연구는 첫째, 독자층과 교양소설의 측면을 분석하였다. 우선『대륙』은 일본어 독해가 가능한 조선인을 포함한 조선 거주 일본인들이 읽었을 가능성이 있는 소설이다. 특히 『국민신보』는 청소년을 예상 독자로 삼은 주간지였다. 따라서 『대륙』의 교훈적·계몽적 성격은 사실상 청소년이라는 예상 독자를 고려한 서사 전략일 수도 있다. 둘째, 매체 특성과 신문연재소설의 측면을 분석하였다. 일반적인 신문연재소설들에서도 확인할 수 있는 것처럼, 대중성은 중요한 요건이다. 이러한 매체적 특징과 독자를 고려했을 때, 『대륙』안에서 세 가지 대중성의 서사 전략을 발견하였다. 연애서사를 통해 대중성을 확보했다는 점, 이분법적 대립 구도를 명확하게 드러냈다는 점, 희망의 메시지를 전달하려 했다는 점이다. 이 세 가지 서사 전략은 대중성으로 수렴하면서 매체 서사 전략을 완벽하게 수행한다. 즉, 이 연구는 『대륙』의 서사 전략과 서사 내용 간의 유기적 상관관계를 분석함으로써 『대륙』의 주제 의식은 독자와 매체적 특징을 종합적으로 고려해서 나온 결과라는 점을 주장하고자 하였다. 따라서 이 연구가 선행연구의 외연을 넓히는 새로운 관점을 제시할 수 있기를 기대한다.

영어초록

Han Seol-ya's 『Continent』 is a novel serialized in the 『kukminShinbo』 in 1939, and was written in Japanese. It contains the process of growth in which figures named Oyama and Hayashi pioneer Manchuria as the main subjects. In addition, the main plot is the process in which the main characters make love. Until now, Han Seol-ya's 『Continent』 has been evaluated from the opposing perspective of pro-Japanese and anti-Japanese. This study is the study of an attempt to newly read 『Continent』 in terms of major readers and media narrative strategies that were not mentioned in Han Seol-ya's 『Continent』 study. Han Seol-ya's 『Continent』 is a novel that was produced and distributed through a media called newspapers. For that reason, the novel has no choice but to pursue a media strategy with a connection to the media.
Therefore, this study first analyzed the aspects of readers and liberal arts novels. First of all, Continent is a novel that may have been read by Japanese living in Joseon, including Koreans who can read Japanese. In particular, it was a weekly magazine that made teenagers an expected reader. Therefore, it was analyzed that the instructive and enlightening nature of 『Continent』 may actually be an narrative strategy considering the expected reader. Second, the media characteristics and aspects of newspaper serial novels were analyzed. Popularity is an important requirement, as can be seen in ordinary newspaper serials. Considering these media characteristics and readers, three narrative strategies of popularity were found in the Continent. The fact that he secured popularity through love narratives, clearly revealed the dichotomous confrontation, and tried to convey a message of hope. These three narrative strategies perfectly perform the media strategy while converging into popularity.
In other words, by analyzing the organic correlation between the narrative strategy and the narrative content of 『Continent』, this study attempted to argue that the theme consciousness of 『Continent』 was the result of comprehensively considering the reader and media characteristics. Therefore, it is expected that this study will be able to present a new perspective to expand the scope of previous studies conducted focusing on the subject consciousness of the artist.
