이 논문은 TV 드라마 <눈이 부시게>(2019)를 알츠하이머 질병과 함께 살면서 흐트러진 삶의 시간을 다시 쓰는 노년 여성의 이야기로 읽으면서, 기억력 상실과 인지 장애가 점진적으로 진행되는 가운데 장애화되는 몸의 시간에 대해 생각해보고자 한다. 선행연구는 주로 시간 이동 모티브와 기억력 상실이라는 소재에 초점을 맞추며 드라마가 이러한 장치를 사용해 삶과 노화에 대한 통찰력을 전달하는 방법을 강조했다. 반면, 이 연구는 시간과 기억의 선형성이 흐트러진 내면 세계를 외화하는 중심인물의 신체 전환을 장애학의 관점에서 조명한다. <눈이 부시게>에서 신체 나이와 본인이 정체화하고 있는 나이의 동일성이 흐트러진 주인공의 자기 분열, 그리고 자신의 몸이지만 낯선 몸이기도 한 이 새로운 몸을 통해 이제까지와 다른 사회적 관계를 경험하는 사건의 연쇄는 노화와 장애의 관계성에 대해 생각할 계기를 마련해 준다. <눈이 부시게>는 내러티브를 주도적으로 이끄는 중심인물을 알츠하이머 노인으로 설정하고 이러한 장치의 노출을 후반부에 배치해 시청자를 혼란에 빠뜨리는 동시에, 시청자가 ‘신뢰할 수 없는 서술자’의 경험과 기억을 재구성하는 데 능동적으로 참여하도록 유도한다. 이러한 서사적 전략은 그 독해의 과정에서 시청자를 ‘취약한 주체’의 존재를 지우는 공범자로 만든다는 점에서 이 드라마의 윤리적 지향과 모순된다. 그럼에도 <눈이 부시게>가 노화와 장애를 타자화하지 않는 방식으로 시간과 기억, 주체성과 관계성을 재고할 계기를 열어주며, 고령화 시대 새로운 기억 서사를 시도한 점은 평가할 만하다.

영어초록

This essay reviews the Korean TV series, The Light in Your Eyes (2019), with focus on the debilitation of the body and its time as experienced by the series' heroine, an elderly woman diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, as she rewrites the time of her life through the progression of memory loss and cognitive dysfunction. The previous research on the series has focused mostly on the time-travel motif and the theme of memory loss, emphasizing how the series uses these devices to deliver insights into life and aging. This study, on the other hand, examines the protagonist's body swap (bodily transitions) from a disability perspective as she exteriorizes her inner world, where the linearity of time and memory is disrupted. The Light in Your Eyes highlights the main character's self-fragmentation as the age she identifies with is no longer her legal and social age, and how that fragmented self leads to experiences with new social relationships. Using an Alzheimer's patient to expose the extremely disorienting nature of that inside-outside discord, the series links inevitable aging with disability and invites the viewer to contemplate on time as experienced by the body. Having an Alzheimer's patient—the quintessential “unreliable narrator”—lead the overall narrative of the series confuses the viewer, but also invites the viewer to participate in the main character's process of actively reconfiguring and rewriting fragments of her memory. This narrative strategy contradicts the ethical orientation of the drama in that it makes the viewer an accomplice in erasing the existence of the ‘vulnerable subject’ in the process of reading. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that The Light in Your Eyes broadens the opportunities to rethink time and memory, subjectivity and relationships in a way that does not otherize aging and disability, and attempts to create new memory narratives in the age of aging.
