초록

본 논문은 20세기를 대표하는 작품 중 한 편인 최인훈 <광장>이 지닌 현재적 의미를 재검토하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이 글에서는 <광장>의 시공간적 배경인 갑작스러운 분단과 한국전쟁을 일종의 재난 상황으로 규정하고, 팬데믹(pandemic)이라는 또 다른 의미의 재난을 관통하고 있는 현재에서의 의의를 살펴보고자 하였다.
재난은 뜻밖에 일어난 재앙과 고난으로 불안과 공포를 가져오는 것이라 할 때, 분단과 전쟁을 다루고 있는 <광장>은 분단 이후 한국 사회의 위험 및 재난을 다루고 있는 작품이라 할 수 있다. 소설에서는 빨갱이의 아들이라는 이유로 경찰서에서 고문을 당하는 명준을 통해 국가 권력의 폭력을 보여준다. 재난의 상황에서 중앙집권적인 근대 국가의 권력은 더욱 강력하게 작동하게 되며, 이러한 권력은 공동체에 위험을 가하는 혹은 가할 수 있는 타자에 대한 배제 및 공격을 가능하게 한다. 좌우익의 대립과 혼란, 분단을 겪은 한국은 ‘빨갱이’를 체제를 위험에 빠뜨릴 수 있는 불온한 ‘타자’로 규정하고 색출⋅관리함으로써, 국가의 결속력과 질서를 공고히 하고자 했던 것이다. 우리는 <광장>을 통해 위험에 대한 불안감과 공포를 조장하여 타자에 대한 경계 및 혐오를 만들어내는 국가 권력의 폭력성과 이데올로기의 변질을 목도하게 된다.
이러한 위험 상황에서 자신의 방에서 나와 진정한 ‘광장’을 찾아 떠나는 명준의 여정은 관념의 세계, 풍문의 세계에 갇혀 있는 삶이 아닌 타자와의 소통을 지향하는 삶, 타자와 진정한 연대를 만들 수 있는 삶을 향한 탐색 과정이라 할 수 있다. 또한, 그는 윤애, 은혜를 통해 진정한 사랑을 깨달아 가는데, 이러한 사랑의 완성을 향한 과정은 견고한 알 속에 갇혀 있던 주체가 타자를 만나 ‘나’를 넘어서는 ‘초월’의 경험을 하는 것이다. 결국 <광장>은 사람을 위해 생겨난 이데올로기가 변질되어 도리어 인간을 배척하고 탄압하는 역전된 상황을 비판하고, 이를 타자와의 진정한 소통, 즉 사랑을 통해 극복하고자 하는 사랑의 서사이다.
코로나19와 같은 팬데믹 바이러스는 인류 공동체의 연대를 요구하면서도 국가 간의 경쟁과 갈등을 야기하고 있으며, 사회적 약자와 소수자들에게 대한 배제와 혐오를 촉진시키기도 한다. 또한 팬데믹이 불러온 사회적 거리두기 및 언택트 문화는 타인과의 진정한 교류를 저하시키기도 하였다. 이러한 포스트 팬데믹 상황에서 소설 <광장>은 과거의 한국사회에 대한 비판에 머무는 것이 아니라 현재 우리에게 진정한 광장이 있는지, 진정한 소통과 연대가 있는지를 다시금 묻고 있다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 그런 의미에서 <광장>은 문학사적 의의를 넘어, 우리시대에 필요한 본질적인 화두를 던지고 있는 문제작이라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This study aims to reassess the contemporary significance of The Square, a work by Choi In-hoon, considered one of the representative pieces of the 20th century. In this article, the sudden division and the Korean War, which served as the spatiotemporal background of The Square are defined as a kind of disaster. Furthermore, the study aims to examine the significance of the present moment, which is permeated by another type of disaster, namely the pandemic.
When considering disasters as unforeseen calamities and hardships that bring about anxiety and fear, it can be argued that The Square which deals with division and war, is a work addressing the risks and disasters within Korean society following the division. The novel portrays the violence of state power through the character Myung-jun, who is subjected to torture at the police station due to being labeled as the son of a “Red”. In a risk society where disasters occur, the centralized power of the modern nation operates even more forcefully, enabling exclusion and attacks on others who may threaten the community. Amid ideological conflicts and confusion resulting from division, Korea identifies the “Reds” as impure “others” who can potentially jeopardize the regime and subjects them to scrutiny and control, thereby seeking to strengthen national unity and order. Through The Square we are confronted with the violent nature of state power that fosters a sense of unease and fear regarding risks, while cultivating boundaries and hatred towards the “other” ultimately leading to the distortion of both the violence of state power and the ideology behind it.
In this risky society, Myung-jun’s journey of leaving his room and seeking the true square can be seen as exploring a life that seeks communication with the “other” rather than being confined to the realms of concepts and rumors. It is a quest for a life that can establish genuine solidarity with others. Moreover, through his encounters with Yoon-ae and Eun-hye, Myung-jun gradually realizes true love. Completing love involves breaking free from the confines of a solidified ego and experiencing transcendence, surpassing the boundaries of the self through encounters with the “other”. Ultimately, The Square criticizes the distortion of ideologies created initially for humanity’s sake but have instead turned against and oppressed individuals. It aims to overcome this reversed situation through proper communication with the “other,” namely love. Thus, The Square can be regarded as a narrative of love that seeks to criticize and transcend the adverse circumstances where ideologies meant for humanity’s well-being have become perverted and rejected humanity itself.
The pandemic virus, such as COVID-19, demands a crisis and solidarity within the global community. Yet, it also generates competition and conflicts among nations while promoting exclusion and hatred towards socially vulnerable and marginalized individuals. In addition, the social distancing and untact culture brought about by the pandemic have also reduced true exchanges with others. In this context, the novel The Square holds significance in not merely dwelling on criticisms of past Korean society but also questioning whether a true square exists for us in the present and whether genuine communication and solidarity can be achieved. It prompts us to reconsider these fundamental aspects, particularly in current circumstances, where the pandemic exacerbates societal divisions and prejudices.
