인간적인 것 너머의 종교학, 그 가능성의 모색: 종교학의 ‘생태학적 전회’를 상상하며 (The Religious Studies Beyond the Human : Imagining the ‘Ecological Turn’ of the Religious Studies)

초록

인간을 이해하기 위해, ‘가장 인간적인’ 현상으로서 종교를 이해하고 설명하려는 시도에서 출발한 종교학은 그간 꾸준히 연구 범위를 넓혀왔다. 그런데 오늘날 우리는 실제적인 생태환경 악화의 문제를 통해 인간중심적 사고의 한계를 심각하게 경험하고 있다.
많은 현대인들은 생태적 위기를 경험하면서, 세상을 바라보는 우리의 인간중심적 시각에 문제가 있었음을 느끼고 있다. 그리고 인간적인 것 너머로 확장된 시야에서 인간을, 그리고 인간적인 것을 새롭게 바라보는 시선의 변화가 전 방위에서 요청되고 있다. 실제적이고 복합적인 문제로서 생태환경의 악화는 오늘날 종교를 논의하기 위해서도 매우중요한 맥락을 형성한다.
이러한 맥락에서 중요하게 부각되는 것이 생태학적 시각과 종교연구의 접목이다.
이 글은 종교연구에 생태학적 시각을 접목해서 진행되어온 학계의 연구 동향을 살펴보고, 이를 통해 이른바 ‘인간적인 것 너머의 종교학’의 가능성을 모색하는 것을 목적으로한다. 그런데 생태학이라는 단어가 포괄하는 내용은 광범위하며, 생태학적 접근법은 단일하지 않다. 이 글에서는 생태학으로 통칭되는 여러 층위의 이야기들을 엄밀히 구분하기보다는, 그러한 복합적 층위의 생태학과 종교학이 만나서 새롭게 탄생할 수 있는 이야기의 층위들을 상상해보려고 한다.
이를 위해 먼저 이른바 자연과 문화의 관계에 주목해서 진행되어온 연구의 갈래를살필 것이다. 많은 학자들은 생태학적 시각을 자신의 연구에 접목시킬 때, 종교를 포함한 인간의 문화가 자연과 상호관계 속에 있다는 점에 착안해서 연구를 진행해왔다. 곧인간의 문화는 “자연”이란 개념 자체가 구성되는 방식에서 중요한 역할을 하며, 자연 세계 자체는 “종교” 개념이 구성되는 방식에서 중요한 역할을 한다는 것이다. II장에서는이처럼 자연과 문화의 상호 관계에 주목해서 진행되어온 연구 흐름을 살피고자 한다.
그런데 생태학과 종교연구의 만남이 ‘자연과 문화’의 상호관계의 구도에서만 진행되는 것은 아니다. 자연과 문화의 분리를 암묵적으로 전제한 뒤 그것들을 다시 연결하려는 기획에 문제를 느껴온 학자들이 있다. 그러한 선행연구들을 바탕으로, III장과 IV장에서는 고전적인 ‘문화와 자연’의 이분법을 넘어서 생태학적 시각을 종교연구에 접목할 수있는 가능성을 살펴보려 한다. III장에서는 문화의 중재 없이 개인의 직접적인 경험을 중시하는 흐름을 살피고, 이를 종교연구에 접목할 수 있는 가능성을 찾아보려 한다. IV장에서는 이른바 ‘유기체+환경’의 생존단위에서 종교현상을 재정위하고, 문화, 나아가 인간적인 것 너머로 확장하는 종교학의 가능성을 모색해보려 한다

영어초록

The religious studies, which started from an attempt to explain the religion in terms of ‘the distinctive human’ phenomenon, has been steadily expanding its scope of researches. However, this human-centered perspectives and reasonings have caused the ecological problems and we are now seriously confronted with the ecological crises. And the changes are greatly asked in the human -only-oriented viewpoint. The deteriorations of the ecological environment are urgently practical problems and involved in complex issues, which eventually draw our attentions into the context of the religious studies.
What is important in here is how the ecology and the religious studies work together in the same arena. The purpose of this essay is to survey the research trends how to combine the ecological perspectives with the religious studies, and to explore the possibility of what is so-called ‘the Religious Studies Beyond the Human’. Here, I try to figure out the various layers of the ecological views and explore its possibilities and the proposals and offerings done by the religious studies.
For this purpose, I firstly pay attention to the relationship between nature and culture. The scholars of the ecological studies have importantly focused on the fact that human cultures, including religion, are in a keen relationship with nature. Human culture plays an crucial role in a way, in which the notion of “nature” is itself consisted, and the natural world also plays an important role in the way, in which the concept of “religion” is constructed. In Chapter II, I will look at research tendency, paying attention to the inter-relationship between nature and culture.
However, the encountering between the ecology and the religious studies does not proceed only in the direction of elucidating the interrelationship of 'nature and culture'. But some scholars felt the problems in tacitly presupposed separation of nature and culture and then propose to plan to reconnect this separation. In Chapter III and IV I am applying the ecological perspective to the religious studies over beyond the classical 'culture and nature' dichotomy. In Chapter III, I look at the direct individual experience of the ecological agendas without the intervention of culture and look for the possibilities to incorporate Arne Naess's the “deep” awareness of the deep ecology into the religious studies. In Chapter IV, I explore to redefines the religious phenomenon on focusing on the so-called ‘organism+ environment’ format, and look for the possibilities of establishing the notion of ‘the Religious Studies beyond the Human’.
