재현불가능한 것을 우회하는 재현들 - 리오타르와 랑시에르를 넘어서 (Representations that Circumvent the Unrepresentable - Beyond Lyotard and Rancière)

초록

오늘날 우리가 삶과 예술에서 마주하는 문제는 종종, 성찰 없는 발전의 배후에 남겨진, 재현불가능한 고통들을 지시한다. 멀게는 아우슈비츠가 그랬고, 가까이는 세월호가 그러했으며, 이들은 특수한 개별 사건으로 머물지 않고 지속적으로 되돌아오는 우리 모두의 주제가 된다. 이 같은 ‘재현불가능한 것’의 문제에 관하여, 리오타르와 랑시에르는 두 상이한 태도를 주장한다. 리오타르에 따르면 재현불가능한 것은 영원한 심연으로 남겨져야 한다. 재현의 프레임을 만듦으로써 그 밖으로 그것을 배제시킨 리얼리즘과, 상징을 통해 그것을 헛되이 암시하고자 했던 모더니즘을 비판하며, 그는 모든 의미화를 거부하고 형식적인 실험에 몰두함으로써 단지 ‘재현불가능한 무언가가 존재한다’는 사실을 현시했던 당대의 예술을 옹호했다. 한편 랑시에르는 ‘재현불가능성에의 강박’이 한 차례 지나간 시기로 오늘을 진단하며, 새로운 ‘감성의 분할’을 통해 배제된 것들을 복권시키는 재현의 끝없는 가능성을 이야기한다. 그것이야말로 몫 없는 자들에게 로고스를 주는 민주주의의 추동력이자, 모든 예술이 근본적으로 행하는 일이라는 것이다. 두 철학자가 보여주는 불가능성과 가능성에 대한 논의는 오늘의 우리에게 중요한 주제가 된다. 그것은 다만 둘 중 무엇을 선택할 것이냐, 재현을 할 것이냐 하지 않을 것이냐에 그치지 않고, 가능성과 불가능성 사이의 무한한 스펙트럼을 이해하는 일과, 그 사이 어디쯤에 스스로를 위치시킴으로써 매순간 재현의 형식을 고민하고, 그 윤리와 정치를 고민하고, 결국 세계와 인간을 바라보는 시선을 고민하는 일로 연결되기 때문이다. 본고는 그 ‘사이’에 있는 대안으로서의 ‘우회하는 재현’의 장치를 고찰하며, 리오타르와 랑시에르의 이론 양자가 갖는 결함을 보다 실제적인 차원에서 극복하고자 한다. 이는 재현불가능한 것 자체를 겨냥하지 않는 암시적 재현들이 관객 개개인에게 재현불가능한 실재와의 만남을 우발적으로 가능케 할 수 있다는 가설로서, 《젊은 모색 2019》에서 전시된 김지영 작가의 작업이 그 사례가 될 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

Oftentimes the problems we face in life and art today indicate the unrepresentable pains that remain in the wake of progress without reflection. The historical examples of such pains abound, from Auschwitz to more recently, the sinking of the Sewol ferry. They do not remain as specific individual incidents, but rather become a subject for us all, one that relentlessly circles back to us.
In regards to this problem of ‘the unrepresentable,’ Lyotard and Rancière each advocate two different attitudes. According to Lyotard, the unrepresentable must remain a boundless abyss. He criticizes Realism that excluded the unrepresentable by constructing a frame of representation, and Modernism that futilely attempted to imply it through symbols. Instead, he supported the art of his time that merely revealed that ‘something unrepresentable exists’ by rejecting all signification and solely engaging in formal experiments. On the other hand, Rancière diagnoses today as a period where the ‘compulsion of the unrepresentable’ has once passed, and discusses the endless possibilities of representation that reinstates the excluded through the new ‘distribution of the sensible.’ According to Rancière, it is the very impetus of democracy, which gives logos to those without language, and what all art does fundamentally.
The two philosophers’ discussion of the impossibility and possibility leaves us an important subject for further analysis because it goes beyond choosing between the two—whether to represent or not. Rather, it leads to understanding the endless spectrum between the possibility and impossibility, contemplating on the form of representation each moment by locating oneself somewhere in that spectrum, reflecting upon the ethics and politics of it, and eventually considering how to view the world and human.
This paper investigates the apparatus of the ‘representation that circumvents’ as an alternative ‘in-between’ the two points of view, and attempts to overcome the shortcomings of each theory on a more practical level. It hypothesizes that implicit representations, which do not directly point to the unrepresentable, may accidentally allow each viewer to encounter the unrepresentable reality. Jiyoung Keem’s work in the Young Korean Artists 2019 exhibition is analyzed as a case in point.
