초록

Rey Chow defined “primitive passions” with double meaning focused on the modern Chinese films in her book, Primitive Passions. One is passion of the West to find primitivism of the other. The other is passion of Chinese nationalists to seek their pure and original identity. In other words, it is a kind of passion to regain the primitive as the lost origin or something left behind. She also analyzed modernity in China as the process and result of internalizing this western primitive passion by themselves. Similarly, there are two kinds of primitive passions in Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. First of all, Okwonkwo, the protagonist of the novel has primitive passion for his past authority and the pre-modern patriarchal community. And there is also the colonizing power of the white who finds ways to repress that kind of passion with another kind of passion to define others with a primitive gaze. Rey Chow analyzed a strategic and ethnographic representation in Zang Yimou’s cinema, which bears a striking likeness to Achebe’s detailed and realistic description of folklore, proverbs, cultural and social tradition in Umofia community. Their common intention of those representation is directed toward the West and their own people as well with double purposes to criticise both of them. Therefore, my study examines how Achebe performed creative cultural translation in his novel as an ethnographer based on Rey Chow's “primitive passions.”
