초록

There is no doubt that the Bei Wei(北魏) tomb Inscriptions provide an attractive topic among stone carving materials related to the mourning culture, considering the number and composition of tomb Inscriptions and the periodic divergence of their content. They are even more attractive in that the changing characteristics of their stone carving itself became prominent after the transfer of the capital. The analysis of tomb Inscriptions in terms of appearance and content engraved in stone will help to check the changing aspects of tomb Inscriptions themselves and explore their possibilities as historical materials.
It is, however, difficult to affirm the standardization or tendency of Bei Wei tomb Inscriptions at the current moment. There were words engraved in stone since the "tomb Inscriptions of Fengxi(馮熙墓誌)" engraved in the 19th year of King Taihe(太和)'s reign(495), but it is not much difficult to discover tomb Inscriptions missing some of their components including words engraved in stone even 30 years after the year. There were some tomb Inscriptions whose methods of paying tribute to the cemetery hosts were not much different from words engraved in stone before them. It is true that the clues of tomb Inscriptions standardization were confirmed in Bei Wei tomb Inscriptions, but there are no clear answers about the criteria of standardization yet.
It is no exaggeration to say that this series of process was to explore the possibilities of converting stone carving materials into historical ones. The conclusion is that stone carving materials have full potential as texts. At the same time, a task emerged which was to overcome the limitation that the depictions of the tomb Inscriptions host's life and also his merit and virtue could be subjective. It might have been already predicted in the process of tomb Inscriptions being converted into records to demonstrate individuals' merit and value from the means of marking.
