고전소설의 감정을 어떻게 읽을 것인가? (How to Read the Emotion in Koran Classical Novels)

초록

이 글에서는 고전소설의 감정 연구를 체계화하고 고전여성문학의 연구 시각을 확장하는 차원에서 ‘고전소설의 감정을 어떻게 읽을 것인가’를 논의하였다.
첫째, 감정의 개념과 관련 쟁점을 검토함으로써 고전소설 감정 연구의 토대를 마련하고자 하였다. 감정으로 고전소설을 읽기 위해서는 감정의 범주와 층위를 고려한 접근이 요구된다. 이에 근거해 고전소설의 감정을 찾고 이를 목록화해야 한다. 고전소설을 통해 감정의 보편성과 상대성을 파악하는 것은 물론이거니와 시대별, 양식별, 작품별 감정 지형을 읽고 인물의 감정이 고전소설사 안에서 어떻게 움직이는지를 살피는 길을 열어줄 것이다.
둘째, 감정 판독 문제를 구체화함으로써 감정 읽기의 오류를 최소화하고 독법의 정확성을 기하고자 하였다. 감정을 판독할 때 인물의 발화를 통해 표현된 감정, 신체 반응, 행동이 인물의 실제 감정과 다를 수 있다는 점, 인물의 감정과 다른 주체의 감정이 혼동될 수 있다는 점, 그리고 감정 추론 과정에 연구자의 감정과 관점이 개입될 수 있다는 점 등을 주의해야 한다. 최근 빅 데이터를 활용한 감정 연구가 이뤄지고 있는데 감정 판독의 타당성을 높이려면 통계 수치 이면에 가려진 인물의 실제 감정을 추출하고 원전과 이차 텍스트(현대역)의 간극을 줄이는 보완 작업이 필요해 보인다.
셋째, 감정과 이성을 대립 개념으로 본 고전적 감정론에서 탈주해 감정에 대해 보다 전환적으로 접근할 것을 제안하였다. 감정에 대한 인식과 가치판단은 인물의 감정 해석과 직결되는데, 고전적 감정론에 입각하면 인물을 제한적으로 읽을 수밖에 없다. 그러나 감정에 대한 이해를 확장한다면 인물에 내재한 저항력과 문제의식을 조명하고 고전소설에 나타난 감정의 복합성, 다층성, 시대성, 역사성, 사회성, 문화성, 공간성, 관계성 등을 읽는 것이 가능하다.
넷째, 조선시대 여성의 감정은 억압받고 통제되었다는 자명한 사실에 물음을 던지고 그에 따른 해석의 도식성을 살펴봄으로써 여성인물의 감정을 다층적으로 해석할 방향을 모색하였다. 감정 표출은 주체적(능동)이며 감정 억압은 비주체적(수동성)이라는 이분법을 극복하고 감정의 목적, 지향, 관계, 구조 등을 염두에 둔 독법으로 나아가야 한다. 이때 도덕적 주체로서의 자기조절, 신념, 판단에 의한 여성의 감정 결정을 간과해서는 안 된다.
이러한 방법론적 고민이 더해진다면 조선시대 여성의 감정 동기와 행위를 해명하고 여전히 불투명한 여성사의 빈틈을 메울 수 있을 것이다. 또한 고전소설에 나타난 인물의 감정을 한층 두텁게 읽고 조선시대 감정담론, 감정문학사, 감정문화사를 보완할 수 있을 것으로 본다.

영어초록

The purpose of the article is to suggest the emotion research methodology in Korean classical novels in order to read the characters and works accurately and to supplement the emotional culture history of the Joseon Dynasty. In particular, this study goes beyond the fragmentary understanding of the women who were not controlled and subjectively expressed their emotions by social customs and enables various interpretations of the women and to reinterpret the emotion discourses of the Joseon Dynasty. The research directions and results of this paper are as follows.
The study aimed to organize the research methodology for emotions in classical novels by discussing the concepts and issues of emotions. As in the field of classical studies, the term and concept of emotion are used interchangeably with terms that resemble emotion such as feeling, affect, sentiment etc. Although the emotions of the same person vary depending on the situation and relationship, the level and intensity of emotions were not distinguished in the emotional research of classical novels. So in this study, it was suggested to analyze classical novels by dividing the category and the level of emotion and to make a list of emotions in classical novels.
Futhermore, it is necessary to read the character's emotions correctly to reduce errors in the emotion research. As the real feelings of a character may differ from what the researcher, reader, or narrator finds. Recently, new emotional research using big data is being conducted. However, to increase the validity of emotional reading, studies should be added to find the real emotions of the characters hidden behind statistical figures and reduce the errors of secondary texts that translated the original text.
In addition, this paper suggested to overcome a methodology for studying characters' emotions based on traditional view of emotion that understand emotion and reason as opposed concepts each others. As the characters have been divided into emotional and rational characters so far. It is important the perception and point of view about emotions because of connecting directly the interpretation of characters's emotions. It is possible to illuminate the resistance and the problem consciousness inherent in it only when it is out of the classical emotion theory.
Finally, the study tried to understand Joseon Dynasty's theory of emotion by rethinking the fact that women at that time were oppressed and controlled by social customs. Therefore, we should read character's emotions considering the purpose, orientation, relationship, and structure of emotions, and avoid the simplified interpretation that the woman who expressed emotion is subjective, and the woman who does not express emotion is passive.
This study contribute that it can read the emotions of characters more deeply and reveal the emotional grammar and affective logic in the classical novels. It possible to go beyond the mere understanding about women and to fill the empty gap of the female history covered with patriarchy in Joseon Dynasty. If the emotional research based on classical novels continues, it can be newly written or read the history of classical novel and the distorted history of women written by the sentimental theory in Joseon Dynasty.
