Where Do We Start with the Lukan Studies? : Its Unity, Genre and Purpose in Luke-Acts Revisited

This essay deals with the relationship between the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles in terms of unity, genre and purpose. I introduce the major scholarly views in detail to be noticed and then briefly present a proposal based on my critical evaluation on each of them. Regarding the unity of the Lukan literature, it is more appropriate to accept the coin term of ‘Luke-Acts’ rather than Luke and/or Acts, while we can employ this concept of understanding in a flexible way according to its interested topics, diverse themes, various theological issues, and so forth. In other words, the Lukan documents can also be respectively examined in so far as considering their intrinsic nature. On the issue of genre of Luke-Acts (or Luke and/or Acts), I draw a careful attention to the Greek word found in Lk. 1:1. In so doing, I highlight the writing form of biblical narrative - which is undeniable yet so much much neglected in genre debates – as literary point of departure.
The Lukan preface(1:1-4) must be primarily in mind to propose the broad yet very relevant elements of the purpose of Luke-Acts. Based on this observation, I suggest to grasp that Luke-Acts is trustworthy and reliable, and is also delineated to be evangelistic and apologetic, which is entirely captivated by the will/plan of God through Jesus and his witnesses( church) in this overall narrative.
