초록

『주역(周易)』 「대상전(大象傳)」에서는 건⋅곤(乾坤)괘 괘상(卦象)에 대하여 “하늘의 운행이 강건하니, 군자가 이것을 본받아서 스스로 강건하여 멈추지 않는다(天行, 健, 君子以自强不息).”, “땅의 형세가 곤(坤)이니, 군자는 이것을 본받아서 두터운 덕으로 만물을 실어준다(地勢, 坤, 君子以厚德載物).”라고 주석한다. 건⋅곤괘의 괘상에 대한 이러한 해석은 천지(天地)의 도(道)와 덕(德)을 ‘본받아[以]’ 실현하는 군자의 수행(修行)이라는 구조를 통하여 『주역』 철학의 핵심적인 기틀을 제공한다.
『주역』 철학에서 군자가 본받아[以] 수행해야 하는 것은 천지(天地)의 변화가 멈춤 없이 운행되는 것을 잘 관찰하여, 그 변화의 기미(機微)를 알아차리는 것이다. 천지의 변화는 단지 자연의 변화만이 아닌, 천지의 도(道)를 본받아 덕(德)으로서 실현하는 인간의 모든 일을 포함한다. 군자만이 아닌, 현재의 우리 또한 『주역』 철학을 통하여, 모든 일의 변화의 때를 놓치고 후회하거나 부끄러움을 당하지 않도록 공구(恐懼)하여 수행할 수 있다. 괘(卦)와 효(爻)에 관한 이해와 판단 과정 속에서, 자신의 삶의 근거, 존재의 양태와 구체적인 관계에 대한 반성적인 모색과 판단을 하여 실천하고자 하는 것이다. 이것은 고정된 틀이 아닌 변화에 감응(感應)하는 열려 있는 과정으로, 변화 속에서도 일관된 생생(生生)의 과정을 통찰하는 것으로, 천지 철학에서 본받아야 할 지혜(智慧)이며, 중도(中道)의 수행이다.
『주역』 「대상전(大象傳)」 건⋅곤(乾坤)괘 괘상(卦象)를 통하여 사사로운 편견이나 아집, 시시때때로 변하는 감정에 휘둘리지 않은 가장 적정[中]한 상태를 유지할 수 있는 지혜를 터득하여, 일상적으로 수행을 하는 것이 본받음 철학의 핵심이다.

영어초록

The book Daxiangzhuan(大象傳) explains that the hexagrams of Qian(乾) and Kun(坤) in Zhouyi(周易) mean “As Heaven runs vigorously, the virtuous man learns from it and becomes robust himself without stop,” and “As Earth embraces calmly, the virtuous man learns from it and carries all things on Earth with abundant De(virtue, 德),” respectively. Such interpretation of the hexagrams of Qian and Kun provides a core foundation for Zhouyi philosophy as the way of self-cultivation of the virtuous man where he learns what Dao(道) and De(德) are from Heaven and Earth and practices what was learned.
In Zhouyi philosophy, what the virtuous man should learn and put into practice is to carefully observe and get an insight into the constant changes occurring in Heaven and Earth and notice a harbinger of those changes(機微). The changes of Heaven and Earth do not merely refer to the changes in nature, they also include the changes in all human affairs that realize De by learning and practicing Dao of Heaven and Earth. We, living in the modern era, as well as the virtuous man, should be fearful and cultivate ourselves to spot the moments of change even in difficult times with Zhouyi philosophy in order not to regret or be ashamed of missing those moments. Zhouyi philosophy leads individuals or groups of people within a specific situation and context to explore and make decisions on the basis of one’s life and existence or specific relationships in a reflective way in the process of understanding hexagrams(卦) and lines(爻). We always need to perceive the exact time(時中) and the harbinger of changes(機微) to have a firm and clear understanding of the reality of these temporary and momentary beings and have a deep insight into ‘the circulation of life without a complete extinction(生生)’ which would always remain constant amid those changes. This is the wisdom and the middle path that we should learn from Heaven and Earth.
To practice self-cultivation to maintain the state of being moderate[中] where we are not swayed by personal bias or obstinacy, or constantly changing emotions through 64 hexagrams(卦) and 384 lines(爻) of Zhouyi is the key of the book Daxiangzhuan.
