관람객의 주체적 해석과 경험을 위한 아카이브 전시연출 고찰 -국립현대미술관《미술이 문학을 만났을 때》전시를 중심으로- (A Study on the Archive Exhibitions for Visitors' Subjective Interpretation and Experience -focused on MMCA’s exhibition “Encounters Between Korean Art and Literature in the Modern Age”-)

초록

과거의 박물관 전시가 일방적으로 관람객들에게 지식을 주입하였다면 새로운 박물관의 전시에서는 관람객의 능동적인 참여를 통한 전시물과 주제의 주체적인 해석이 강조되고 있다. 이제 박물관은 하나의 의미만을 관람객들에게 전달하는 방식이 아닌, 박물관과 관람객들이 함께 의미를 만들고 수정하고 다양한 해석을 공유하는 방식으로 전시를 진행한다. 전문가의 영역이었던 전시물의 선별과 해석에서 조차 자유와 권한을 관람자에게 더 많이 부여하여 이전의 지식구조와 다른 전시 모델을 지향하고 있다. 관람객의 경험과 주체적 학습자로서의 의미 구성을 중시하는 관람객 중심 박물관에서는 이렇게 관람객들의 자유로운 선택을 존중하는 형식이 요구되는데 이를 수용하는 전시방법으로서 최근 아카이브 전시가 새롭게 부각되고 있다. 아카이브 전시는 단순한 기록물의 공유와 공개에서 발전하여 내러티브 전시의 맥락 속에서 관람객의 이해를 심화시키는 전시연출 수단의 새로운 방법론으로 주목된다. 국립현대미술관 덕수궁관에서 열린《미술이 문학을 만났을 때》(2021.2.4.-5.30)는 우리나라 일제 식민 치하에서 예술가들이 서로 교유하던 관계에 주목한 전시로 미학적 전략으로서 아카이브전으로 기획 된 것은 아니지만, 편지, 드로잉, 자료사진, 희귀본 도서 등의 자료와 복제된 시각자료, 영상 등 방대한 양의 기록물 자료를 작품과 함께 전시한 아카이브전으로서의 성격을 강하게 가진 기획전이다. 관람객에게 주체적 해석과 경험을 제공하고, 기록물의 공유와 공개를 통해 내러티브 전시의 맥락 속에서 전시의 이해를 심화시키는 아카이브 전시의 특성을 잘 활용하고 있는 예로서 이 전시를 긍정적으로 고찰해 보고자한다.

영어초록

If museum exhibitions in the past unilaterally instilled knowledge into visitors, the exhibition in the new museum emphasizes the subjective interpretation of exhibits and themes through active participation of visitors. Now, museums will not convey only one meaning to visitors, but will display it in a way that museums and visitors can create, modify, and share various interpretations together. Even in the selection and interpretation of exhibits, which were the areas of experts, more freedom and authority are given to visitors, aiming for exhibition models different from previous knowledge structures. Visitors-centered museums, which value the experience of visitors and the composition of their meanings as independent learners, require a form of respecting visitors' free choice, and the exhibition of archives has recently been highlighted as an exhibition method to accept it. Archive exhibitions are attracting attention as a new methodology for exhibition production that develops from simple sharing and disclosure of archives to deepen visitors' understanding in the context of narrative exhibitions. The "Encounters Between Korean Art and Literature in the Modern Age" (2021.2.4.-5.30) held at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Deoksugung, was an exhibition focusing on the relationship between the artist and the artist during the Japanese colonial period. Although not designed as an archive exhibition as an aesthetic strategy, the special exhibition that has a strong character as an archive exhibition exhibits a vast amount of documentary materials such as letters, drawings, material photographs, and rare books, and duplicated visual materials and videos. In this thesis, it will be discussed that this exhibition as an example of utilizing the characteristics of the archive exhibition, that provide subjective interpretation and experience to visitors and deepen their understanding of the exhibition in the context of narrative exhibitions.
