중세초기 개종한 기독교인을 위한 교육 －7, 8세기 앵글로 색슨지역의 참회고행지침서를 중심으로－ (Seventh and Eighth Centuries Anglo-Saxon’s Religious Education through Penitentials)

초록

본 연구는 7세기 8세기 앵글로 색슨지역에서 사용된 참회고행지침서들에 나타난 기독교교육의 목적, 방법, 내용을 분석하고 있다. 7세기 8세기에 앵글로색슨지역에서는 새롭게 개종한 기독교인들을 교육할 필요성에 접하게 된다. 당시 로마가 망하고 새롭게 유럽의 주인이 된 게르만 족들은 기독교로 개종하게 되고, 자연스럽게 개종하기 이전 그들이 실천하고 있었던 관습들은 기독교의 가치와 상충하게 된다. 그러나 성경에 나타난 다양한 죄에 대한 처벌은 새롭게 개종한 기독교인들이 지키기에는 어려움이 많았다. 교회는 새롭게 개종한 기독교인들이 교회에 성결한 상태로 남아있기를 원하였으며, 그들에게 기독교의 가치를 가르칠 필요성을 접하게 되었다. 그리고 기독교의 가치와 가장 상충되는 것은 성범죄와 관련된 것들이었고, 성범죄는 도덕법에 속하기 때문에 자연스럽게 교회에서 이를 다루게 되었다. 사제와 감독은 7세기 초 이전에 아일랜드에서 수도사들을 교육하기 위해서 사용되었던 참회고행지침서를 채택하여 평민들을 교육하기 위한 것으로 내용을 보충하고 변화시키게 된다. 그리고 자연스럽게 기독교의 가치가 내면화된 9세기부터는 참회고행지침서는 새롭게 개종한 기독교인들을 교육하는 측면보다는 샤를마뉴의 문예부흥을 이끄는데 중심적인 역할로 사용이 변화된다. 7세기 8세기의 앵글로색슨지역에서 사용된 이러한 세 개의 참회고행지침서는 중세라는 기틀이 형성되는 과정에서 개종한 기독교인들을 교육하는 기능을 담당하였으며, 사제와 감독은 자신의 관할 지역을 기독교정신에 기초한 기독교사회로 만들고자 하였다. 이처럼 기독교사회를 만드는데 죄의 고백과 그에 상응하는 참회의 내용을 담고 있는 참회고행지침서는 새롭게 개종한 기독교인을 교육하는데 가장 적합한 교육 자료로 사용되었음을 알 수 있다.

영어초록

This article explores the educational function, purpose, curriculum and teaching-learning process of early medieval Christians by analyzing three Anglo-Saxon penitentials in the seventh and eighth centuries. During the Early Medieval period, the bishop and priests required to their Christianized society because the newly converts were the culturally diverse group of people and composed with diverse cultures. Among specifically in Anglo-Saxons, penitentials fuctioned as educational textbooks for newly converted Christians in the seventh and eighth centuries. In contrast to the authors of earlier Irish penitentials, Theodore, Bede, and Egbert systematized contemporary the sexual codes and drew up detailed lists of sexual sins and appropriate penance. This aspect of the Anglo-Saxon penitentials demonstrated the potentially contrast ideas mong those diverse newly converted to Christianitys’ group The diversity of culture was highlighted in the lists of sexual sins, which revealed significant differences between the Christian ideas and secular laws. This finding suggests that the Christian church needed to educate new converts so they would support their Christian mores society. Christian values concerning sexuality were different from the general practice in this time period and region but the Biblical punishments for sexual sins could not be applied to Anglo-Saxons of the seventh and eighth centuries. Naturally, Christian bishop and priests tried to control sexual behavior. Sexual practices were at the center of the conflict between Christian values and practices. In this arena, bishops and priests served as teachers more than simply as judges. The authors of three penitentials offered blueprint for the sinner’s conversion; they were didactic and catechetical as well as disciplinary.
Even though the use of the penitentials by Christians of this period is not entirely clear to us today, enough is known to be able to say that the purposes of the early Anglo-Saxon penitentials was to serve as the educational textbooks for the newly converted Christians. The three penitentials discussed in this article were different from later penitentials because the Christian ideas were internalized after the tenth Europe.
