초록

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of various sleep problems in Korean elementary school children and any differences due to school grade and gender.
Methods: One public elementary school in Daegu, Korea was randomly selected, and parents who agreed to participate the study were asked to complete a modified version of Tucson Children’s Assessment of Sleep Apnea screening questionnaire.
Results: The most common sleep problem was ‘falling asleep in a vehicle’, and the prevalence rate for this differed by grade. The prevalence rates for falling asleep while watching TV before 8 P.M., daytime fatigue, and nocturnal enuresis during the past 6 months were 8.0%, 21.9%, and 5.3%, respectively. All of these rates differed by grade. The prevalence rates for falling asleep while doing homework, falling asleep during a lesson, snoring, and sleep bruxism were 12.6%, 1.0%, 26.7%, 13.2%. . Although these rates did not differ by grade, snoring was more prevalent in boys, and more girls had daytime fatigue.
Conclusion: This study demonstrates that many children attending an elementary school may have various sleep problems. Children in the lower grades had sleep problems which relate to neurodevelopmental factors, whereas those in the higher grades had sleep problems associated with sleep deprivation and stress. Finally, more female than male students showed signs of fatigue or sleepiness.
