靑莊館 李德懋의 小說觀이 갖는 의의 (Research on Novel Notion of Lee Demoo)

초록

이 글은 이덕무의 소설비평이 갖는 몇 가지 특징을 분석하여 그의 소설에 대한 인식과 소설 배척론의 본질을 규명하는 것을 목적으로 한다.
이덕무는 문학의 사회적 기능, 교육적 기능에 대한 자각을 바탕으로 소설을 玩物喪志의 전형으로 간주하여 소설무용론을 제시하였다. 조선 후기에 와서 한문과 한글 通俗讀書物들의대량 인쇄와 발행을 동반한 통속문학의 대중화는 이미 상당한 정도로 진행되었다. 그 이면에는 朱子學에 대한 허무의식과 각종 사회모순에 대한 불만이 주된 원인으로 작용하였지만, 일반인들의 미지세계에 대한 호기심과 실제로 실현될 수 없는 각종 욕망의 간접실현이라는 점도 통속문학 유행의 중요한 원인이었다. 유교경전과 詩賦 등 고아한 학문과 문학으로 지적욕구를 충족시키고 개인적인 영달을 실현하고자 하는 욕망을 성취하던 정통 유교사회의 각종모순이 격화되면서 사회에 대한 환멸과 개인의 심리적 공백을 초래하게 되었다.
燕巖 그룹은 이러한 사회 모순을 해결하는 대책으로 北學과 변혁을 외쳤지만 爲政者와 사회로부터의 반응이 희미하여 시국에 대해 큰 영향력을 발휘할 수 없었다. 이들은 忠君, 愛國,愛民 등 전통 사대부로서 부민강국강병의 이상을 실현하지 못한 채 고민에 빠지거나 긴 한숨을 내쉴 수밖에 없었다. 이덕무는 이러한 현실적인 흐름에 대항할 힘도 없고 그것을 변혁하려큰 소리로 외칠 처지도 아니지만 정직한 문인, 교육가, 비평가로서 용기 있게 문학 비평이라는무기를 들어 畸形的 문학 현상에 대해 비판적 안목을 드러낸 것이다.

영어초록

The thesis study on Lee Demoo’s viewpoint on novel and the innate character of useless theory by analyzing several features of his fiction criticism.
By the later period of Joseon Dynasty, the light literature was in a popular style along with the mass printing and publishing of popular literature in Chinese and Korean language. The main factor is the dissatisfaction for nothingness of Neo-Confucianism and social contradictions, but another important reason is that novel is a factor for realizing ordinary peoples’ desire can’t be realized in reality with their curiosity on unknown world. With intensifying of contradictions in satisfying aspiration to knowledge by elegant literature such as Confucianism classical or poems, and desire for glory to lead to disillusion on society and blank in mental.
The proposition of learning from Qing Dynasty promoted by Yonam Club for solving social contradictions were not accepted by authorities, so they fell in pessimism as scholar .bureaucrat who loves their monarch, country and people because they could not realize the ideal of rejuvenating the country and enriching the people. Although he has no power to resist the current trend, or raise a cry of warning to reform, Lee Demoo showed his courage and vision in criticizing abnormal literature as an upright scholar, educator and critic.
As a literary critic with mental perception, he predicted the age of novel in advance. Every sign points to the fact that he had read all kinds of domestic and overseas’ novels he could get, including the Four Great Classical Novels.
However, rather by interesting, he mainly did some further research on origin of novels, socio-economic factor in background and the utilitarian of novels as an expert. Especially, the criticism on Water Margin can be considered as the first research paper by textual researching on this masterwork in the history of literature.
Generally speaking, the theory of novel useless promoted by Lee Demoo, who regards the Neo-Confucianism as orthodox thoughts, can be named an overcorrect conclusion after the surveying the side effect in cultural education followed with spread of popular fiction from the viewpoint of a responsible and upright scholar.
