지석묘사회의 취락패턴과 복합화 — GIS를 활용한 영산강중류역 취락패턴의 재구성 (A Study on the Complexity and Settlement Pattern of Dolmen Society)

초록

본고에서는 계층성과 상호관계성에 의해 재정의된 헤테라키(heterarchy) 접근법에 기초하여 지석묘사회의 취락패턴을 분석하고, 이를 근거로 사회복합도의 진전도를 살펴보았다. 헤테라키의 실행모델로는농경수장사회의 조직체제를 설명하는 하달형(top-down)·자발형(bottom-up)모델을 적용하였다. 지석묘사회의 국지적·지역적 취락패턴이 하달형에 해당할 경우 계층성이 높고, 자발형일 경우에는 상호관계성이 낮을 것으로 예상하였다.
취락패턴 분석은 영산강중류역을 대상으로 하였으며, 취락 분포는 발굴조사된 취락유적과 지석묘를 근거로 재구성하였다. 분석방법으로는 GIS를 이용하여 취락의 국지적·지역적 분포패턴을 분석하였다.
국지적 취락패턴은 중심취락 주변의 집주양상, 농업생산환경, 하천망과의 접근성, 중심주변취락의상호작용을 검토하였으며, 지역적 취락패턴은 일상생활권, 경제생활권, 일일생활권 내의 취락 간의 상호작용에 대해 분석하였다. 분석결과, 영산강중류역 지석묘사회의 취락패턴은 하달형과 자발형이 혼재하는 양상을 보였으며, 헤테라키의 제유형을 보여주는 ‘복합체계 모델’ 내에서는 계층성이 상대적으로 높고, 상호관계성이 낮은 피라미드형의 사회복합화 유형에 속하였다.
청동기시대에 도작농경의 본격화에 따른 사회경제체제의 변화는 취락체계의 수직적·수평적 분화의 주요 요인이 되었지만, 각 지역단위에서의 사회복합화는 각기 다르게 전개되었을 것이다. 이러한 청동기시대 초기복합사회의 역동적인 복합화 양상을 파악하기 위해서는 헤테라키 접근법에 의한 취락패턴 연구가 요구된다.

영어초록

This paper looks at the settlement pattern of dolmen society from the perspective of heterarchy, which focuses on hierarchy and networks to explain social complexity. Models chosen to explain the organizational structure of an agricultural chiefdom are top-down and bottom-up models. A local and regional settlement pattern corresponding to the top-down model is considered to indicate a high hierarchy; correspondence to the spontaneous bottom-up model, on the other hand, indiciates a very low level of network.
The target area of this study is the mid-riparian area of the Yeongsan River.
The distribution of settlements was reconstructed based on the settlements and dolmens found in the area, and according to GIS-based spatial analysis. To understand the local settlement pattern, the concentration around the central settlement, the agricultural production environment, accessibility to the rivers, and interactions between the central and peripheral settlements were looked at.
To identify the regional settlement patterns, interactions between the settlements in their immediate living zone, their economic living sphere, and their daily living zone were analyzed.
The results of the analysis present a mixed settlement pattern of both topdown and bottom-up models. Within the ‘complex system’ of heterarchy, dolmen society is characterized by a pyramid type of social complexity, featuring a relatively high level of hierarchy and a low level of network.
Widespread wetland rice cultivation in the Bronze Age led to changes in the socio-economic organization of the settlements in the region, resulting in their vertical and horizontal differentiation, The growth of social complexity at the local level, however, may be assumed to have not evolved concurrently in an uniform manner. To understand how the social and power elements of early settlements in the Bronze Age gradually grew into a complex and dynamic structure, further studies based on the heterarchical-approach are needed.
