스승과 제자, 강세황(姜世晃)이 쓴 김홍도(金弘道)전기 : 「檀園記」․「檀園記 又一本」 (A Master and A Disciple Danwongi and Danwongi Uilbon - Biographies of Kim Hong-do(1745-1816?) by Kang Se-hwang(1713-1791))

초록

이 글은 조선후기 화단을 대표하는 표암(豹菴) 강세황(姜世晃 1713-1791)과 단원(檀園) 김홍도(金弘道 1745-1816?)의 특별한 인연, 즉 스승과 제자이자 예술계의 지기(知己)로서 소통하는 관계였던 사실에 초점을 두고 살펴본 것이다.
시서화 삼절(三絶)로서 서화평론까지 겸한 강세황이 “예원의 총수”라면, 다방면에 절묘한 필력을 드러내면서 당대 가장 한국적이고 수준 높은 회화세계를 이룩하였고 수많은 불후의 명작을 남긴천재화가 김홍도는 “화단의 중추”라 할만하다.
강세황과 김홍도, 두 사람이 돈독한 관계였기에 가능했던 여러 기록 자료들은 한국회화사상막중한 가치를 지닌다. 그 가운데 「단원기」와 「단원기 우일본」은 각별하다. 이 두 글은 소략한 전기이지만 작가 김홍도의 전모를 그려볼 수 있는 수십 가지의 내용이 압축적으로 알차게 담겨 있다. 특히 스승 강세황의 목소리로 생생하게 밝힌 김홍도의 사승관계 대목이 돋보인다.
“나와 사능의 사귐이 전후하여 모두 세 번 변했다. 처음에는 사능이 어려서(7~8세) 내 문하에 다닐 때 그의 재능을 칭찬하기도 하고, 그에게 화결(畵訣)을 가르치기도 하였다. 중간에는 같은 관청에있으면서 아침저녁으로 함께 거처하였다. 나중에는 함께 예술계에 있으면서 지기(知己)로 느껴졌다.”대개 화원화가들은 관련 기록이 드물고 그림을 배운 내력이 거의 밝혀지지 않아 그들의 작품세계를 이해할 때 막연하고 피상적으로 접근하는 것이 보통이다. 그에 비해 김홍도의 경우는, 그림이 무엇인지 화결을 배운 연원과 그의 그림이 당대에 이미 어떤 위상을 가졌는지, 그리고 그의 지향점이 무엇이었는지, 또 문인들과 문예적인 소통은 어떠하였는지, 등등 여러 사안에 대해 실질적으로알 수 있다는 점이 특기할만하다. 작품과 기록 자료가 함께 전해지는 것은 김홍도에게도 행운이고또 후대 사람들에게도 행운이다.
강세황의 화평이 있는 김홍도 풍속화에서 드러나듯이 ‘김홍도는 그림으로 강세황은 글로’ 당시의 풍속을 그려내었다. 문인화가 강세황과 화원화가 김홍도가 각자의 위치에서 서로 소통하며 동아시아 그림의 보편성과 한국적 특수성을 잘 구현해냈다.
두 사람은 나이도 신분도 달랐지만 각자의 예술인생에서 서로 가장 중요한 사람이었다. 그러므로 그들이 문예에 대한 지식과 정보를 공유하고 그림의 요체와 정신을 함께 지녔던 사실에 주목하고 그 의미를 더욱 깊이 살필 수 있어야 하겠다. 그렇게 될 때 김홍도 작품은 물론이고 여타 화원화가들이 제작한 그림의 성격에 대한 이해도 깊이를 더할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This study focuses on the relationship between Kang Se-hwang (a.k.a. Pyoam, 1713-1791) and Kim Hong-do (a.k.a. Danwon, 1745-1816?), the two of the greatest artists of late Joseon who were a master and his disciple and close fellow painters.
Kang has been generally regarded as the "chief of the art world" who excelled his contemporaries in the areas of poetry, calligraphy, painting, and even criticism while his disciple, Kim Hong-do, was the "backbone of the painters community" who was admired for opening up new ground in traditional Korean painting, producing a wealth of masterpieces.
The two great artists maintained close, friendly relations, and produced quite a large amount of records about their relationship and art which are now regarded as extremely valuable regarding the Korean art history. Among them Danwongi and Danwongi uilbon are particularly important. The two texts contain brief biographical episodes providing various important aspects of Kim Hong-do's life and art. The highlights of the texts include vivid descriptions of Kang Se-hwang's own writing of the master-disciple relationship between the two great artists.
My friendship with Saneung [i.e. Kim Hong-do] is consisted of three important stages. The first stage began when he was young(seven or eight years old), and became my pupil. I regarded him highly for his talent and taught him art(畵訣) among others. In the second stage, we served in the same government office, meeting each other every morning and evening.
Finally I began to feel that he was my friend and colleague as we were engaged in the world of art.
In general, researchers suffer a lack of information about court painters of the Joseon Dynasty, and therefore their access to the their art is rather limited, resulting in knowledge vague and superficial. Contrastingly, Kim Hong-do left a large amount of information about his life and art, helping readers understand how he started his career as a painter, how his works were regarded among art lovers of his time, what his art was aiming at, and how he was communicated with his contemporary men of letters. That there is a wealth of paintings and records survived today is great luck not just for the artist but for today's art lovers.
As shown by postscripts Kang Se-hwang wrote on Kim Hong-do's genre paintings,Kim Hong-do depicted various scenes of everyday life led by people of late Joseon with his paintings and Kang Se-hwang with his writings. Both the literati artist and the court painter captured universality of East Asian paintings and particularity of Korean cultural heritage,while maintaining active communications between themselves.
There was a wide gap between the two in age and social status, but each was a very important being to the other in terms of their art. Therefore, their researchers need to be able to share knowledge and information about their art, and explore deeper meaning of their works by focusing on the essence and spirit of art. Only then the works of Kim Hong-do and other court painters will be better understood.
