초록

This study examined the patterns of life and death implemented in documentary film <My Love, Don’t Cross That River>, dividing them into life showing a fantasy of love and death as an extension of life.
With regard to life showing a fantasy of love, this study explored how this movie implemented the fantasy of love in the real world through the representation of complementary transactions and positive stimuli in reality. The conversation and mutual stimulation between the old husband and wife in the movie are implemented perfectly in the couple’s life as if they are a standard model of complementary transactions and positive stroke mentioned in Eric Berne’s Transactional Analysis (TA).
With regard to death as an extension of life, this study explored the meaning of death implemented in the movie, focusing on images and editing that confronted death with the undivided worldview of life and death. This movie reveals as it is Korean people’s traditional undivided worldview, namely, the thought that death is not disconnection but is connected to life as one. Moreover, it exposes plainly the old man’s uncomfortable health status and mind just before his death and the scene of his death and dressing of the dead body. By confronting the audience with death, from which they have so far turned their face away, the movie has them look back their own present lives.
In conclusion, documentary film <My Love, Don’t Cross That River> enjoyed unexpected popularity because it re‐illuminated the meaning of life through death that people had refused to face.
