동양 지식 체계의 계보화 - 姜春山의 「東洋道學의 體系如何」 - (Genealogy of Oriental knowledge systems by Gang Chun-san)

초록

한국 근대 학문은 전통 지식 체계와 새로운 지식 체계가 뒤엉키고, 상호 간극을 좁히려는 시도와 길항을 반복하는 가운데 형성되었다. 1921년 『개벽』에 연재된 姜仁澤의 「東洋道學의 體系如何」는 서양 학술 개념과 사조를 수용하여 전통 지식 체계를 재해석하고 계보화한 사례로서 주목에 값한다. 이글은 ‘도학’을 제목으로 사용하면서도 유학을 중심으로 한 기존의 道統論的 서술방식을 탈피했는데, 천도교 교리에 바탕을 둔 종교적 성향과 함께 동시대 중국과 일본에서 출판된 철학사를 두루 참고했기 때문이다.
여기서 발견되는 정신문화를 앞세운 동양적 우월주의는 면밀한 학술적 분석에서 도출된 결과라기보다는 ‘동양’ 담론과 마찬가지로 하나의 이념적 가공물이다. 정신과 물질의 이원화 전략과 도덕을 중심으로 한 전통 지식 체계의 재발견 시도는 서양 근대 문명에 강박된 주체의 자기 부정과 정체성의 몰각화로부터 스스로를 자각하기 위한 주체의 고투였다. 또한 물질보다 정신의 개조를 강조한 강인택의 개조론은 천도교의 그것과 크게 다르지 않았다.
「東洋道學의 體系如何」는 서양 철학 개념을 다수 원용하여 전통 지식 체계를 재해석한 것이다. 이 과정에서 전통적 개념과 서구 학술 개념이 혼종되었고, ‘도학’ 개념의 의미장 안에 ‘철학’ 개념이 포괄되었다. 유교적 전통에서 이단으로 배척되었던 楊朱와 墨翟이 대등한 학술적 지위를 점하고 이들을 비판했던 孟子가 상대적으로 격하된 데는 당대 풍미했던 사회진화론과 사회주의의 영향을 배제할 수 없다.
강인택은 서양 학술 개념과 사조를 전유하여 전통 지식 체계의 계보를 재구성하였고, 천도교 문화운동과 계몽운동을 통해 민족독립운동에 헌신하였다. 「東洋道學의 體系如何」는 일제강점기 한국근대철학사에 대한 관심을 촉구한다. 특히 이 시기에 나타나는 개념의 혼종과 변용, 담론의 전유와 의미론적 확장 등을 분석하는 데 개념사적 접근은 유효한 방법이다.

영어초록

Korean modern studies have been shaped as traditional knowledge system ran afoul of new knowledge system, and as competitions and attempts to bridge the gap between the two different knowledge systems repeated. Genealogy of Oriental knowledge systems by Kang Chun-san serialized in Gaebyeok in 1921 is remarkable as an example that reinterpreted and genealogized the traditional knowledge system by embracing western academic concepts and thoughts. The writing is differentiated from the traditional Confucian orthodox style of narration, though it is titled ‘Dohak’, because Kang In-taek having a religious disposition based on the doctrine of Cheondogyo referred extensively to the philosophical books published in China and Japan in the same period.
Like a discourse on the Orient, oriental supremacy emphasizing spiritual culture in the writing is more of an ideological artifact than the result derived from an in-depth academic analysis. The attempt to rediscover the traditional knowledge system focused on the dualism between spirit and material and the morality reflects a struggle caused by self-denial to obsession with modern western civilization and self-consciousness over the ignorance of identity. Kang In-taek’s reconstruction theory which puts more stress on renovating spirit than material is not much different from the one of Cheondogyo.
Kang In-taek reinterpreted the traditional knowledge system by quoting a number of western philosophical concepts. Meanwhile, traditional and western academic concepts were blended, and the semantic conflict between ‘philosophy’ and ‘Dohak’ arose. In addition to many different western academic concepts, social evolution theory and socialism powerful at that time were involved. It is characterized by ‘Yangzhou’ and ‘Mukjeok’ held equivalent academic positions even though once excluded as heresy from Confucian tradition and by ‘Mencius’ criticized and degraded relatively.
It is Kang In-taek who devoted himself to the national independence movement through cultural movement and enlightenment campaign of Cheondogyo and reconstituted the genealogy of traditional knowledge system by taking sole possession of western academic concepts and thoughts. Genealogy of Oriental knowledge system demands to have an interest in Korean modern history of philosophy during the Japanese colonial era. Particularly, the conceptual approach is an efficient method to analyze combination and transformation of the concepts, exclusive possession of discourse and semantic extension appeared in those days.
