맹강녀(孟姜女) 설화의 서사문학적 가치 재구 (Restoration of The Value of Narrative Literature of Maengkangnyeo Tale)

초록

이 논문은 맹강녀 설화가 관(官)과 민(民)을 아우르며 2000년 간 유전해 올 수 있었던 서사문학적 특질에 초점을 맞추었다. 이를 위해 문헌 전승 기록과 구비 전승 기록의 차이점을 살펴, 전승 집단의 의식에 따라 캐릭터의 변이와 새로운 서사구조의 등장, 보다 명징해진 주제의식을 이해할 수 있었다. 그런 가운데 한국 서사문학과의 교섭 양상을 살폈다.
≪좌전≫에서부터 민을 교화하고 계몽하는 목적으로 기록된 기량 처 이야기는 당대(唐代)에 이르러 맹강녀 설화로 자리 잡는다. 연못 상봉과 적혈로 남편의 뼈를 찾는 새로운 화소가 추가되었지만 감정보다는 이성을 앞세운 절제된 미덕이 강조되었다. 당대의 위정자는 그것을 여성을 통해 구현하고자 하였다.
당대 이후의 구비 전승 자료 가운데 8편을 채택해 민이 추구하던 서사적 비장미에 대해 살폈다. 민의 전승에서는 적강, 인신공희, 관탈민녀, 세 가지 조건, 지명전설, 인명전설, 이계, 밀고자, 변신담 등이 새롭게 추가된다. 이 화소들은 인물들의 절제된 이성보다는 솔직한 감정 상태를 살리고, 짜임새를 갖춘 서사 구조로, 가치 있는 삶을 추구하기 위해 죽음도 불사하는 비장한 주제의식을 발현한다.
맹강녀 설화의 서사문학적 특질은 인물의 형상화 과정이 그녀의 곡(哭)과 연대해 이루어진다는 사실에서 먼저 눈에 띤다. 이러한 곡의 형태가 한국의 고대시가 <공무도하가>와 <도미전>과도 긴밀한 관계에 있음을 이해하였다. 두 번째 특질은 연희적 서사 공간의 확대란 점이다. 맹강녀 설화의 주요 공간 배경이 크게 세 가지, 곧 가택의 후원 연못에서 장성으로, 다시 바다로 확장된다는 사실에 주목하였다. 후원 연못은 두 남녀 주인공의 만남과 이별이 이루어지는 서사무대로, 장성은 남편의 주검을 위안하고 위정자에 대한 징치를 하는 서사무대로, 바다는 설화 속 등장인물은 물론 민의 해원의식이 치러지는 서사공간으로 접근하였다.
후원 연못을 배경으로 하는 한국적 서사무대로 ≪삼국유사≫ <무왕>조를 살폈고, 장성 서사무대로는 ≪삼국사기≫ <개로왕>조의 축성 상황과 전란 상황이 맹강녀 설화의 시대상황과 근접함을 고구하였다. 바다가 배경인 서사 무대로 <공무도하가>와 ≪삼국유사≫에 산재한 바다에 관한 기록들, 고전소설 <최척전>과 희곡 작품 <만강홍>을 예로 들었다. 연희적 서사 공간의 확대는 당대의 현실을 적나라하게 노출하고자 했던 민의 비원을 담고 있다.
세 번째 특질은 낭만적 세계관의 해원의식이란 측면이다. 맹강녀 설화는 그녀의 죽음으로 비장미를 더한다. 맹강녀의 바다 투신은 이 설화에 의탁한 민의 원성을 풀어 주는 해원의식이다. 민은, 자신들의 현실적 불의를 풀어 준 그녀를 다시 낭만적 죽음의 세계로 돌려보낸다. 이후 출현한 현실적 열부 형의 여성들은 지고지순한 열녀형 인물이지만, 여전히 맹강녀와 도미 처의 맥을 잇는 낭만적 세계관 속의 인물이라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

The present study focused on the characteristics of narrative literature Maengkangnyeo tale to know how the tale has been able to be handed down from both the ruling class and the subjects for about two thousand years. To achieve this objective, this study examined the difference of Maengkangnyeo tale in literately and orally transmitted records and found out that the characters of the tale changed; narrative structure appeared; and the subject consciousness became more solid depending on the awareness of a transmission group. In the meantime, this paper looked into the aspect of negotiation between Maengkangnyeo tale and Korean narrative literature.
The story of Kiryang's wife, which had originated from “Jwajeon”, was written to reform and enlighten the subjects and settled down as Maengkangnyeo tale in Dang Dynasty. Although a new material was added such as 'finding her husband's bones and red blood by change at an pond, the virtue of moderation based on rationality was more emphasized than emotion. The politicians during Dangdae Dynasty tried to realize it through a woman.
This study chose 8 records of orally transmitted data after Dang Dynasty to examine the narrative tragic beauty that the subjects had pursued. The records transmitted from the subjects have such newly added motives to the story as reincarnation, a proposal of human sacrifice, the event of taking away a subject woman, three conditions, legend for the name of a region, legend for the name of a person, ideal world, informer and a story of an animal turning into a human. These motives manifested the tragic thematic consciousness of risking a life to pursue a valuable life through a well-organized narrative structure where the candid emotions of the characters stand out more than moderate rationality.
The first characteristic of the narrative literature of Maengkangnyeo tale is that the process of characterization is made in concert with her kok. It was understood that the types of the kok are closely related to Korean classical poems (Kongmudohaga and Domijeon), too. The second characteristic is openness of narrative space for an event. The major spatial background of Maengkangnyeo tale consists three at large; it moves from a pond in the backyard of the house to a long castle and to the sea again. The pond at the back garden is the narrative space for the main couple characters who meet and separate from each other there while the long castle is the narrative space where she condoles her husband's death and castigates the politicians. And the sea is space for narration of the ritual of revenge by the subjects as well as the main character.
This study found some similarity between Maengkangnyeo tale and other Korean classic literature in terms of narrative stage: “Samkukyusa” and “MuWang” use a pond at backyard as the space for Korea-styled narration while “Samkuksaki” and “Kaerowang” use a long castle for their narrative stage regarding building a castle and war situation. And “Kongmudohaga” and “Samkukyusa” use the sea as narrative space and such narrative stage is found in the classic novel “Choecheokjeon” and play “Mankanghong”. The openness of narrative space is the result from the subjects' tragic wish that they wanted to reveal the reality nakedly.
The third characteristic is the rite of revenging, which is the view of romantic world. Tragic beauty is added to Maengkangnyeo tale as she dies. Maengkangnyeo throwing herself into the sea is a ritual of consoling the resentment of the objects. The subjects send her who solves the injustice they suffer from back to the world of romanic death. And the women appearing after then are realistically virtuous woman in type, but they are characters, in romantic world, succeeding to the legacy of Maengkangnyeo's Domi's wife.
