섬진강 본류역 청동기시대 취락의 분포와 특징 (Distribution and Characteristic Features of the Bronze Age Settlements along the Mainstream Area of the Seomjingang River)

초록

섬진강은 험준한 준령 사이를 가르거나 곡간의 충적대지를 휘돌아 흐르는 것이 특징이다. 이러한 자연 환경 덕분에 섬진강은 감입곡류와 크고 작은 충적지가 발달되어 있다. 그러나 고고학 조사가 상대적으로 적어 그 문화적 성격이 분명하게 드러나지 않았던 지역 가운데 한 곳이다.
본 글은 그동안 보성강 유역을 중심으로 파악되어 왔던 섬진강 유역이 아닌 섬진강 본류역을 중심으로 하는 청동기시대 취락의 성격과 특징을 살피는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 비록 시기적인 취락의 밀도 차가 극명하게 대비되지만 섬진강 본류에 입지한 취락의 분포와 밀도가 갖는 현 시점의 해상도를 높인다는 측면에서 작은 의미를 찾을 수 있다.
섬진강 본류역의 청동기시대 취락은 조기~후기 단계까지 존재하지만 후기 단계의 원형점토대토기문화는 아직까지 분명하지 않다. 즉 조기 단계의 미사리유형, 전기 단계의 가락동․역삼동․흔암리유형, 중기 단계의 송국리유형이 확인되며, 후기 단계는 송국리유형의 지속으로 설명된다. 이러한 배경 속에서 송국리유형은 섬진강 상류역~하류역까지 고르게 분포하고 있으며, 밀도 역시 가장 높기 때문에 청동기시대 섬진강 유역의 대표성을 갖는다.
섬진강 유역권은 공열토기로 대표되는 역삼동유형과 송국리유형의 보편화 및 상호 복합적 성격을 특징으로 한다. 중기 단계에 이르러 재지의 전통적 요소와 새로운 송국리유형의 복합화가 활발하게 진행된 것으로 파악된다. 취락의 구성에서도 전 단계와 달리 발전된 공간배치를 보여준다. 이 시기에 취락의 한 요소로서 무덤의 속성은 명확하지 않지만 묘역식, 기반식 등 다양한 형태의 지석묘가 주요 묘제였을 가능성이 매우 높다.

영어초록

The Seomjingang River is characterized by a mainstream that runs across rugged mountainous areas and winds around alluvial plains extending along valleys. The geographical conditions surrounding the river have resulted in the development of incised meanders and stretches of alluvial land of different sizes. There have been, however, few archaeological studies on the areas around the river’s mainstream, and consequently there is little information about their cultural aspects.
The purpose of this study is to determine the characteristic features of the Bronze Age settlements that formed along the mainstream of the Seomjingang River, a subject that has attracted scant attention from researchers compared with the area around the Boseonggang River, one of the Seomjingang’s main tributaries. The study is expected to increase knowledge about the distribution and density of the prehistoric settlements that sprang up along the mainstream area of the Seomjingang River.
The study shows that the areas along the mainstream of the Seomjingang River were populated with settlements from the initial to the last period of the Korean Bronze Age, although clearer evidence about the cultures formed during the last period of the Bronze Age, represented by round-rimmed earthenware, has yet to be discovered. In sum, these settlements are characterized by Misa-ri type in the initial period, Garak-dong, Yeoksam- dong and Heunam-ri type in the early period, and by Songguk-ri type in the middle and last period. Songguk-ri type is distributed evenly from the upper to the lower reaches of the river, and is more frequently discovered than other types.
The Bronze Age cultures around the Seomjingang River are characterized by the extensive use and mutual influence of Yeoksam-dong type, which is exemplified by rim-perforated jars, and Songguk-ri type. It appears to have been during the middle period that the traditional elements were briskly combined with the new Songguk-ri type and that the settlements began to adopt a more advanced spatial layout. There is no clear evidence of the relationship between the settlements and burial practices, but it is highly probable that the dolmen was the main burial form.
