영산강유역 방대형분의 출현과 축조 배경 (The Appearance of a Squarish Platform Tomb in Yeongsangang River Basin and its Building Background)

초록

영산강유역 고분은 고총고분이 등장하는 5세기 중엽에 큰 변화가 시작된다. 고총고분 출현은 방대형 분구의 축조와 궤를 같이하는 점에서 의미가 크다. 현재 方臺形 高塚古墳 출현을 주도한 세력이나 주체에 대해 이견이 분분한데, 필자는 梯形墳과의 연속성이 중요한 판별 기준이라는 관점에서 그 축조 배경을 살피고자 하였다.
검토 결과, 크게 다섯 가지로 정리된다. 첫째, 방대형분은 영산강유역 고총고분 축조의 서막을 알리는 고고자료로, 분형 자체만으로도 사회적 상징성(symbolism)을 갖는다. 둘째, 등장을 계기로 매장 종류가 석곽·석실 위주로 바뀌는 묘·장제적 변화가 일어난다. 셋째, 제형분의 종언을 가속화시킨 결과를 유도하였으나, 한편으로는 기요소를 여전히 계승·발전시키려는 내용도 포함하고 있다. 넷째, 분구 高大化를 완성키 위한 입체식 공법과 새로운 축조기술이 반영된 이후 사회 전반에 확산되었다. 다섯째, 매장구조, 부장품, 축조방식과 같은 제요소에서 백제, 가야, 신라, 왜 등의 다원적 출자가 확인되었다.
영산강유역의 고총고분 초현 자료인 靈巖 沃野里 方臺形 1號墳은 입지성(단독 분리), 계층성(대상부 중심묘와 범면 추가묘), 매장 종류(횡구식석곽), 축조 기술(기획성토법)에서 기존 고분 내용과는 다른 신 요소로 완성된다. 그러나 분구 내에 복수의 피장자를 안치하는 다장 장법, 관내 토기 부장 등과 같은 요소는 지역의 매장전통과 연속된다는 점에서 축조 주체가 재지집단과 무관하지 않다고 보아야 한다. 특히 초현기 방대형 고총고분에서 개배 부장이 확인되지 않는 점은 백제와의 관계만으로 출현 배경을 설명하기 곤란하다는 것을 반증한다. 고총고분 자료 속에 담겨있는 다원적이고 융합적인 요소들은 영산강유역 재지사회가 백제 왕권에 편입된 6세기 중엽 이전까지도 나름의 사회문화적 전통을 유지하면서 외부세력과 관계했다고 볼 수 있는 고고자료로 평가된다.

영어초록

The ancient tombs in Yeongsan-gang River basin began to change greatly in the middle of the 5th century when an ancient tomb appeared. The appearance of an ancient tomb is very significant in that it was in parallel with the building of a squarish platform burial mound. At present, there are various disagreements over the forces or subjects that led the appearance of an ancient squarish platform tomb. Thus, the author examined the building background from the perspective that a continuity with a trapezoidal tomb is an important criterion.
The results are summarized in five broad categories. First, a squarish platform tomb is an archaeological material that signaled the beginning of building of an ancient tomb in Yeongsan-gang River basin, and it has a social symbolism in itself. Second, the appearance of a squarish platform tomb changes the type of entombment mainly into stone coffin and stone chamber. Third, although a squarish platform tomb led to the acceleration of the end of a trapezoidal tomb, it also includes the content of inheriting and developing the existing elements. Fourth, after a three-dimensional building method and a new building technique were reflected to complete the enlargement of a burial mound, a squarish platform tomb spread throughout the society. Fifth, various contribution of Baekje, Gaya, Silla, and Japan were confirmed in various elements such as burial structure, burial accessories, and building method.
Yeongam Ogyari Ancient Squarish Platform Tomb No. 1, which is an early appearance of an ancient tomb, is evaluated to have been completed with new elements different from the contents of existing ancient tombs in locationality (i.e. single isolation), stratification (i.e. central tomb at top of platform and extra tomb on slope), type of entombment (i.e. corridor-type stone coffin), and building technique (planned mound layering method). However, the subject of building should be considered to have relevance to local group in that elements such as placing more than one corpse in burial mound (or multi-burial method) and putting pottery together in a coffin are in line with local traditions of entombment. In particular, the burial of a lidded cup as an accessory is not identified in the ancient squarish platform tomb of the early appearance stage, which suggests that only the relationship with Baekje is not sufficient to explain the background of its appearance. The multifaceted and convergent elements contained in ancient tombs are evaluated as archaeological materials to show that the community in Yeongsan River basin had a relationship with external forces while maintaining its own social and cultural traditions until the mid-6th century, when the community was merged into Baekje Kingdom.
