Considering the fact that significant activities including combats of the Righteous Army, 3․1 Independence Movement of Korea, Gwangju Student Independence Movement and other movements of independence activists overseas took place in the Yeongsan River Basin, excavation of the remains from the national movement and erection of memorial facilities in area by the river are surprisingly neglected. Remains from the national movement in the river such as concentration field, old battlefield, hard-fought field, training field and weapon factory show intensity of battle in the area. The reason why the Righteous Army remains in Naju were not recognized is because the remains has not yet been excavated even though the area was an important spot for the Righteous Army. It is not just Naju but other areas in the Yeongsan River Basin as well. The same also applies to 3․1 Independence Movement of Korea and Gwangju Student Independence Movement.
Remains from the national movement in the Yeongsan River Basin require more interest, research, excavation and thesis. Considering that the Righteous Army used mountains near military borders as theirs headquarters and combat fields, mountains in the Yeongsan River Basin require study in terms of resistance of the Righteous Army. Also the mountains require research on connection among the Armys, link to the resistance and union of the Armys.
For better understanding on the national movement, understanding on colonial government is also needed. There were many spots used for colonial government exploitation and oppression in the Yeongsan River Basin. Only former Naju police station was identified; police station, court and prison were the places to oppress and torture national activists. For clear understanding on the national movement during Japanese forceful regime, not only the places for the national movement but also the ones for oppression on the national movement should be studied, excavated and closely examined. Then history during Japanese forceful regime will be clarified.
The national movement memorial facilities in the Yeongsan River Basin can be roughly divided into the Righteous Army activity in late Chosun, 3․1 Independence Movement of Korea, Gwangju Student Independence Movement and other movements of independence activists overseas. The Righteous Army memorial facilities are mainly for commemorating historic figures; 3․1 Independence Movement memorial facility is for commemorating 3․1 Independence Movement. 3․1 Independence Movement memorial facility is built in a location where local residents can access easily. This is for emphasizing and remembering the value and significance of the movement in our daily life. Gwangju Student Independence Movement memorial facility is built in the school which was the center of the movement; it brings out a sense of presence and historic significance.
In simple comparison among resistance of the Righteous Army, 3․1 Independence Movement and Gwangju Student Independence Movement, degree of significance of each movement in the Yeongsan River Basin would be in this order: resistance of the Righteous Army, Gwangju Student Independence Movement and 3․1 Independence Movement. Compared to other regions, the area was the major spot for resistance of the Righteous Army; rather insignificant for 3․1 Independence Movement; and a leading center for Gwangju Student Independence Movement. Yet, compared to other regions, remains and memorial facilities of resistance of the Righteous Army and Gwangju Student Independence Movement are neglected. Also, links among remains and memorial facilities are not much emphasized. The national movement was not done individually. Therefore close links among people in each area existed. However excavation of remains and erection of memorial facilities are focused on individual figures and areas, which failed to show overall view and organization. Independence Tower in Jangseong focuses only on the national movement of Jangseong and failed to bring out links among each national movement; however it is still significant that it complied and organized the history of the national movement in Jangseong during Japanese forceful regime in late Chosun.
Since Japanese colonial regime and its exploitation were done through the waterway of Youngsan river, each national movement was connected within the area. Spreading process of resistance of the Righteous Army, 3․1 Independence Movement and Gwangju Student Independence Movement proves such connection. Therefore connection should be considered when erecting memorial facilities, which then could become national and cultural resources along with historic remains.
