강진지역 청자의 현황 및 발전 방안 연구 (A Study on the Characteristics, Current State and Development of Celadon Porcelains in the Gangjin Area)

Korea has a long history of ceramics with unique characteristics in each period of the history, developing outstanding ceramic culture. In particular, the superiority of celadon porcelains, which represent Korean ceramics, is recognized worldwide.
Koryo celadon porcelains produced in Gangjin are particularly outstanding that around 80% of celadon porcelains nationally treasured in Korea were from the area, and masterpieces scattered around the world are mostly Gangjin celadon porcelains. Gangjin was a huge celadon porcelain production center as evidenced by the fact that almost a half of some 400 sites of celadon porcelain kilns in the country have been found in Gangjin.
For this reason, Gangjin had secured the technology of gray glazed pottery based on its 1000 year long technological tradition of hard porcelain since the Period of the Three Kingdoms and produced a large number of and a variety of high‐quality celadon porcelains from the late Shilla Dynasty to the Late Koryo and Early Chosun Dynasty. Geographically, the sites of Koryo celadon porcelain kilns in Gangjin were very close to the Wando Island, through which trade goods were imported actively from the Jeolgang and Hwanam Province in the east coast of China, so Gangjin celadon porcelain was influenced by celadon porcelain of Jeolgang Province.
Thus, it is not exaggeration to say that study on Gangjin celadon porcelain is nothing but study on Koryo celadon porcelain.
In order to inherit and develop celadon porcelain culture, a great cultural heritage from our ancestors, local self‐governing bodies as wells private organizations have been exerting huge efforts. Particularly since the enforcement of the local autonomy system, the celadon porcelain industry has been promoted as a local central business in connection to the growth of income for local residents.
Furthermore, a lot of research is required from different perspectives to revive and refine celadon porcelain culture in Gangjin, the home of celadon porcelain, and globalize Gangjin celadon porcelains in the world. With this historical background, the present study purposed to examine the characteristics and the current state of celadon porcelain in the Gangjin area, to recognize the identity of Gangjin celadon porcelain, and to consider how to preserve and develop the tradition of Gangjin celadon porcelain.
