초록

조선후기의 민간도교활동은 수입된 민간도교와 정감록 등을 중심으로 한 참위설적 도교이다.수운은 자신의 동학을 무극대도라고 부르고 있다. 도교적 전통에서 중시되던 무극을 받아들여 자신의 도를 규정한 것이다. 수운이 신비체험을 하고 민간신앙적 성격이 짙으며 우리나라의 경우 민간신앙은 민간도교 현상과 습합된 경우가 많으므로 그의 체험이 민간도교와 친화력이 많다. 수운은 자신이 펴는 하늘님의 도를 무위이화로 보았다는 점에서 노자의 생각과 상통하는 점이 있다. 수운은 노자와 같이 우주의 자율적인 힘에 의한 작용으로 보지 않고, 하늘님의 작용으로 보고 있다는 것이 그 근원적인 차이라고 하겠다.
수련법에서 주문과 영부, 그리고 수심 공부 외에도 다분히 도교적인 기운 공부를 중시하는 정기공부를 아울러서 언급함으로써 유교적인(불교적인) 마음 공부 외에 몸과 기운의 공부를 보완하려고 했던 것으로 보인다. 동학에서의 신선은 도교의 신선과 같이 초월적인 공간에 존재하지도 않고 모든 사람들이 발을 딛고 있는 현실에 존재하며, 어떤 특별한 능력을 지닌 존재이기보다는 한울의 덕을 지닌, 그러므로 천지와 함게 그 덕을 합한 존재이다.
증산이 동학이나 동학농민전쟁과는 다른 노선을 택해 ‘참동학’이라는 신앙으로 세상의 문제를 해결하고 이상세계를 건설하고자했다. 아울러 증산은 지상선경을 이루어 인간이 불로불사하는 도교적 이상세계를 이루는 것이 강세 목적이라 하였으며 인간에게는 도가적 도통을 이루어 도통군자들을 통해 자신의 도가 창성한다고 하였다. 증산의 도가적 경향에서 주목되는 특징은 도가의 무위이화 사상이 증산의 사상 안에 수용되어 기존 신도사상과 연맥되며 증산사상적 신도로 나타나고 있다는 것이다. 증산의 인간완성은 인간이 천강을 받아 이루어지는 차원인데 천강은 하늘에서 내려오는 지기로 의통을 행할 수 있다는 것은 도가의 신이한 치병과 상관성을 또한 보여준다. 지상선경에서 도가에서 도통한 이들이 지상신선이 되어 천하를 경륜하는 세계를 이룩하고자하는 증산의 강세 목적을 볼 수 있다.
수운이 邪를 막기 위한 道氣의 지속성을 수행에서 강조했다면 강증산은 인간의 造福을 중심에 두고 있으며 인간의 마음의 상태를 중요시하고 있음이다. 수운은 시천주 주문을 수련해서 인간이 한울님의 至氣를 받는 것으로 되어 있다면 증산은 시천주만이 아니라 다양한 주문이 수도에 사용되어지고 있다. 스스로 주문을 만들기도 하였다. 수운의 지상신선은 수련을 통해 한울님과의 관계 하에 이루어지는데 증산의 도통군자는 대두목에게 도통하는 방법이 전해지고 유불선의 도통신들이 모여서 심신으로 닦은 바에 따라 통하게 되는 것으로 나타난다.

영어초록

In Daoistic tradition during the late Joseon dynasty, it was a trend among the ruined peers and people of underground to critically diagnose the fate of Joseon dynasty and tell fortunes of the coming new world based on Daoistic folk religion and prophets such as Jeong-gamrok.
Su-wun called his Donghak “Mugeuk Dae Dao(Great Dao of endlessness)”. He accepted the term Muguek(endlessness), which was the key concept of Daoistic tradition, and used it to define his Dao. Su-wun’s Dao was rather close to folk religion because he himself had mythical experiences, which were very similar to Daoistic folk religion. Also, as he characterized Donghak, the Dao given from heaven, as “Creation with Non Action”, his thoughts had common points with the thought of Laozi. However, the foundational difference between the two would be that Laozi considered Creation with Non Action as the action of autonomous force of the universe, while Su-wun viewed it as the action of God.
With regard to training methods, he emphasized cultivating Daoistic energy in addition to mantra chanting, having a divine talisman, and effort of purifying one’s mind. However, the immortals in Donghak do not exist in some transcendental spaces, but they exist in reality just like other people living on earth. They are not special persons who have supernatural powers. Instead, they have the love of God, and they have integrated all energy of love of heaven and earth into themselves.
Jeungsan took a path that was different from Donghak or Donghak peasant movement, and tried to solve worldly problems and build an ideal world with the faith called ‘True Donghak’. Furthermore, he mentioned that he incarnated on earth for the purpose of realizing a Daoistic ideal world where people live young forever. He also said that his Dao will be flourished by people who unified themselves with Dao in Daoistic way.
It can be said that the spirit of ‘opening of the later world’, which is an historical event for all beings in the universe including humanity, was transmitted to Jeungsan in Daoistic tradition. In particular, the Daoistic thought ‘Creation with Non Action’ was mixed into his thought in relation to the existing thought of Shin Dao, which developed into a new Shin Dao of Jeungsan’s.
In Jeungsan’s thought, humans can achieve perfection when they receive the energy of heaven. The people who reached perfection will be able to use energy of the earth and heal any diseases of people. This is similar with mystical healing ability in Daoism. It is the part that reveals Jeungsan’s intention to build a world where people who came to their fulfillment in Daoism become immortals and lead the whole world. While Su-wun emphasized the point of preserving Dao energy in order to prevent any evil energy from coming, Kang Jeungsan’s Dao centered on keeping pure state of mind and doing works in service of others and thus build up good achievements. In Su-wun’s training, practitioners can receive energy of God by reciting Sicheonju mantra, whereas Jeungsan used many incantation for cultivation. They included Sicheonju and ones that he created himself.
In Su-wun’s thought, humans can be immortals by connecting with God through their spiritual training. However, in Jeungsan’s thought, the method of achieving immortality is transmitted to the great leader of Dao, and by cultivating oneself with the methods, every human being can achieve the state of perfect unification with Dao. The level of perfection will vary according to the what each one of them achieved through their cultivation of Seon, Buddhism, and Seon. In this process, the deities of three religions gather and help humans to be unified with Dao according to the level of their cultivation.
