초록

The legend of Dumangang River is the story which explains the background and process why the river came to have the name Dumangang River. Though there remain five works which deal with the legend of Domangang river, that of Han Jungchun's is the prototype and all the rest are modifications of the prototype. The modifications of the legend vary from plagiarism to the editor's intentional abbreviation. That is because they have no idea of the authorship and of publishing ethics.
The legend of Dumangang River consists of the story of Domanggang, the story of Dumankang and the story of Dumangang. The story of Domanggang is different type from the story of Dumankang, but the author made the two connected. The story of Dumangang is a modification of the story of Dumankang which had no connection with the river originally. The story of Domangang reflects the geographic characteristics and the chinese name of the river, Tumenjiang.
The story of Dumankang shows the Chosunjok's cultural superiority, racial generosity and tolerance over those of Manjok. The consciousness of Chosunjok's cultural superiority derives from the cultural difference between Manjok who led the foodgathering lives and Chosunjok who led agrarian lives. On the other hand, the two stories emphasize the two races were derived from the same ancestor. The legend of Dumangang River expresses the story of the name's forming, the culture of the Manjok race who shared the Dumangang river and the history and recognition of the reality of Chosunjok race who had no other choice but to live with the Manjok race in their territory.
