중국 애니메이션 <강자아(姜子牙)> 서사에 나타난 신선·도교문화 및 그 의미 지향 (The culture of immortals and Taoism and its orientation in the narrative of Chinese 3D animation Legend of Deification (2020))

초록

본 논문은 중국의 대표적인 신화·도교서사 고전 텍스트인 『봉신연의』의 서사를 각색하여 만든 3D 애니메이션 영화 <강자아(姜子牙)>(2020)를 분석 대상으로 삼는다. <강자아>는 중국 정부의 ‘문화굴기’ 기조 아래 문화콘텐츠 업계가 전통문화를 적극 활용하는 추세에 따라 탄생한 상업 애니메이션 영화이다. 본 논문은 원전의 서사가 담고 있는 신선·도교문화가 <강자아>에서 어떻게 각색되어 표현되었는지, 각색된 서사의 의미 지향은 무엇인지 구체적으로 탐색하는 것을 목표로 한다.
논의는 다음과 같은 순서로 진행되었다. 우선 논의의 편의를 위해 원전 『봉신연의』의 강자아 형상과 봉신 세계관에 대해 일별하였다. 다음으로 <강자아>에 나타난 신선·도교문화에 대해 ‘신선(神仙)’ 강자아의 신성 실현과 ‘해원(解冤)’의 가치 실현이라는 두 가지 측면을 고찰하였다. 마지막으로 <강자아> 서사의 의미 지향으로는 신성과 인성이 조화되어 있고 전일성을 추구하는 신선의 형상을 부각한 점과 신선·도교문화를 ‘민족화’ 노선 추구에 활용한 점에 대해 논의했다.
<강자아>에서 그 의미를 부각시킨 ‘신선’이라는 형상은 신성과 인성이 조화된 불사의 존재로서, 오래된 전통이지만 중국 사회를 살아가는 현대인들에게 큰 울림을 준다. 천계의 규범과 가치체계에서 벗어나 온전히 자신의 힘으로 신성을 획득하는 신선 강자아의 행보를 지켜보면서, 중국 사회를 살아가는 현대인들은 개인의 삶에 보다 집중하게 됨과 동시에 이를 통해 사회와 개인 간에 형성된 긴장감을 해소할 수 있게 된다. 나아가 전쟁으로 희생된 원혼들 뿐 아니라 소달기와 구미호까지 ‘해원’이 실현되는 것을 지켜보면서 오늘날 글로벌 사회의 미국 중심의 문화표준 및 국제질서에 대한 대항적 의지 및 그것에 의해 배제된 국가나 문명에 대한 인정과 포용이라는 가치를 체득하게 된다.
신선·도교문화는 중국의 토착 전통문화로써 향후 중국 문화콘텐츠 업계에서 더욱 다양한 방식으로 활용될 것으로 보인다. 특히 중국의 신화 및 신선·도교문화를 담고 있는 대표적인 서사 텍스트인 『봉신연의』는 향후 중국이 대표적인 토착 IP로 내세울 ‘봉신 시네마틱 유니버스’ 확립의 바탕이 될 것이다. 우리는 그 과정에서 각색된 서사의 의미 지향을 짚어봄으로써 현대 중국사회의 이데올로기적 방향성과 문화적 심태(心態)를 읽어낼 필요가 있다.

영어초록

This study analyzes the 3D animation film titled Legend of Deification (2020), which is an adaptation of the narrative of Fengshen Yanyi (封神演義), a represntative classic Chinese mythological and Taoist story text. Legend of Deification is a commercial animation film produced in response to the trend of the cultural content industry actively utilizing traditional culture under the ‘China’s Cultural Rise (中國文化屈起)’ initiative. This study aims to specifically explore how the culture of immortals and Taoism contained in the narrative of Fengshen Yanyi is adapted and represented in Legend of Deification, and what the orientation of the adapted narrative is.
The discussion proceeded in the following order. First, for the convenience of the discussion, it took a look at the figure of Jiang Ziya (姜子牙) and fengshen (封神) world in the original text Fengshen Yanyi. Next, about the culture of immortals and Taoism shown in Legend of Deification, two aspects were considered: the realization of the divinity of the ‘immortal being (神仙)’ Jiang Ziya and the realization of the value of ‘resolution of grievances (解冤).’ Last, in terms of the orientation of the narrative Legend of Deification, it was discussed that it highlighted the image of an immortal being who harmonizes divinity and humanity and pursues wholeness, and that the culture of immortals and Taoism was used to pursue the trend of ‘nationalization (民族化).’
The figure of ‘shenxian (神仙)’, whose meaning is highlighted in Legend of Deification, is an immortal being with divinity and humanity in harmony. Although it is an old tradition, it resonates greatly with modern people living in Chinese society. As they watch the steps of the immortal being Jiang Ziya, who breaks away from the celestial norms and value system and acquires divinity entirely through his own power, modern people living in Chinese society become more focused on their individual lives and through this, resolve the tension formed between society and individuals. Furthermore, as they watch not only the vengeful souls sacrificed in the war, but also Daji (妲己) and the Nine-tailed Fox (九尾狐) achieve ‘resolution of grievances (解冤)’, they strengthen their will to oppose the American-centered cultural standards and international order of today’s global society and learn the value of recognition and tolerance for countries and civilizations excluded by it.
The culture of immortals and Taoism is indigenous traditional culture of China and is expected to be used in more diverse ways in the Chinese cultural content industry in the future. In particular, Fengshen Yanyi, a representative narrative text containing Chinese mythology and Taoist culture, will become the basis for establishing the ‘Fengshen Cinematic Universe (封神宇宙)’ that China will present as a representative indigenous IP in the future. We need to read the ideological direction and cultural psychology of modern Chinese society by examining the orientation of the narratives adapted in this process.
