초록

A River Runs Through It demonstrates that it would be possible to settle into Nature’s rhythm by using the exquisite art of fishing to merge into one with Nature, thereby coming close to keeping “God’s rhythm.” It is certain that Paul is the greatest master of the art who completely embodies Nature’s rhythm and grows closest to “God’s rhythm.” However, he is a drunk/hooligan/gambler judging from a worldly point of view and who finally comes to a tragic death. Norman who lived with and loved but did not understand him then tries to reach out to him, while “haunted by waters,” fishing “words” from the bottom of the river and weaving a storytelling text. In so far as an ego-centric viewpoint is adopted, it would be impossible to truly understand the other. In his later years, Norman still keeps fishing at the river and now captures its pattern instead of maintaining his ego-centric viewpoint, which allows him to feel unified with the river. As a result, what cannot be understood can be accepted as it is, and therefore he “can love completely without complete understanding.”
