A Study on the Sense of Place of Afterlife:Focused on Constantine and The Lovely Bones The purpose of this study is to examine the sense of place of afterlife appeared in two contemporary movies of Constantine and The Lovely Bones. The ideas of afterlife have been developed since B.C. 2000, along with Gilgamesh Epoth, which was followed by lots of Christian thoughts and stories through history. As Weber says, the integrated values controled by powerful religion and political sectors in the medieval age, had been splitted into various sectors in society due to the Reformation. This phenomena had been the background of the ideas of afterlife being separated into the various fields such as science, philosophy, ethics, and arts. In this study, the movies are analyzed from the perspective that the world of afterlife described on screen deliver audience the similar or unique sense of place depending on the way of showing it.
Mainly two types of images of afterlife appeared. Constantine has similar images of Christian world of afterlife composed with imitated motives of Christian classics. It describes the world of afterlife of Heaven and Hell controled by devils, half blood creatures, and the man, Constantine. On the other hand, The Lovely Bones shows the world of personal places changing instantly as the person grows and communicate with others who are also dead. As the movies show different worlds and acculturation of motives, the sense of place of afterlife becomes complicated. The Lovely Bones could be the example of diverse images and concepts of afterlife as it tries to describe the new type of the world and use the unique form of motives that has not been used in other existing stories.
Since the ideas of afterlife include the concepts delivered from religion, philosophy, literature and art, this study owes to the main theories by Propp, Weber, Penelhum, and it aims to see the world images in the movies through the concepts developed by Relph.
