초록

This paper explores the issues of homelessness and stranger-ness in Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea. It first looks into Antoinette’s homelessness and stranger-ness, and her anxiety about safety in Coulibri. Then it examines her English husband’s experiences of those emotions in Granbois, focusing on his growing antagonism towards Antoinette and Granbois as her place. In the last part, it looks at their longing for a place where they can live in peace, happiness, and safety, a place that only exists in their wishful imagination. Homelessness and stranger-ness cause a strong anxiety about safety in Antoinette and an urgent need of self-protection in her husband. Antoinette passively deals with her anxiety by imagining herself to be “somewhere else, something else.” Her husband, by contrast, aggressively protects himself by spoiling Granbois and destroying Antoinette. But neither of them can find a place where they feel at home and thereby resolve their homelessness and stranger-ness. Their longing for such a place can never be quenched in the world where the antagonistic binarism of similarity and difference, of friend and enemy, does not allow peaceful and hospitable encounters between strangers.
