초록

본고는 甘肅省 妙因寺의 明代 佛傳壁畫에 관한 연구이다. 묘인사 불전벽화에서 주목되는 것은 다음의 세 가지 현상이다. 첫 번째는 이 작품의 대부분의 내용들이 同省에 위치한 感恩寺 불전벽화와 淸海省의 瞿曇寺 불전벽화에도 그려져 있다는 점이다. 이러한 사실은 명대 서북지역 불전도상이 동일 내용으로 구성되었을 가능성을 의미한다. 따라서 명대 서북지역 불전도상의 양상 파악에 있어 묘인사 불전벽화는 중요한 작품임을 알 수 있다.
두 번째는 이 작품에 지금까지 중국 佛傳圖에서 확인되고 있지 않는 내용들이 그려진 점이다. 따라서 묘인사 불전벽화는 중국 불전도에 있어 새로운 불전도상의 출현을 확인시켜 주는 작품이다. 이렇듯 이 작품은 명대 서북지역 불전도상의양상과 명대 불전도상의 다양성을 증명하는 중요한 작품이다.
세 번째는 묘인사 불전벽화가 명대 변방이자 티베트系 사원에서 제작되었음에도 불구하고 도상과 화풍에서 중원의 영향이 농후한 점이다. 본고는 이와 같은 현상을 규명하기 위해 작품의 발원자인 魯土司의 정체성을 분석하고 구담사와의 관계를 조명해 보았다. 그 결과 이 작품의 도상과 화풍상에서 적극적인 중원의 영향이 나타난 근본적인 원인은 발원자인 노토사의 권력욕에 있었음을 확인했다.

영어초록

The wall paintings of the Buddha's life at Miaoyinsi is a valuable visual document for the study of the illustrations of the Buddha's life in northwestern China during the Ming dynasty, as it is the most well-preserved example from the period in Gansu and Qinghai provinces.
As there are no writings on the murals at Miaoyinsi, earlier scholars have focused on identifying the scenes from the Buddha's life. Based on these previous studies, I have analyzed the iconography and style of the paintings and have determined the following characteristics.
Firstly, although Miaoyinsi is a Tibetan Buddhist temple in Yongdeng county in Gansu province, outskirts of the empire during the Ming period, the iconography and style of the wall paintings show strong association with central China. This was presumably because Lu Tusi was the patron of the murals. As Tibetan Buddhism was traditionally the major religion in northwestern China, Lu Tusi leaned towards this sector of Buddhism. He made active use of Miaoyinsi to solidify his political standings, and wall paintings of the Buddha's life was one of the ways to display his close connections to the Ming dynasty, a formidable military force at the time.
Secondly, most of the iconographies employed at Miaoyinsi also appear on paintings of the same subject at Gan'ensi in Gansu province and Qutansi in Qinghai province. The similarities are noteworthy as it presents a possibility that the illustrations of the Buddha's life made in the area were of similar compositions.
Thirdly, some of the narratives in the Miaoyinsi wall paintings do not appear on other paintings of the Buddha's life made in China.
To sum up, the Miaoyinsi wall paintings are important as they reveal how the illustrations of the Buddha's life was made in the northwest in Ming dynasty, and the diversity of Ming dynasty iconographies of the narrative. Moreover, the painting is noteworthy as a demonstrative example of how visual images were employed by political powers.
