한국고전총간 『國朝人物考』의 교감 방법과 성과 (The Collation Process and Achievements of Gukjoinmulgo(『國朝人物考』))

초록

『國朝人物考』는 이의현이 여말선초부터 18세기 중반까지 활동한 조선시대 주요 인물 2,091명의 전기 자료를 집성하여 편찬한 문헌으로 조선시대 연구에 있어 필수적인 자료로 인식되어 왔다. 이에 한국고전번역원에서는 『국조인물고』의 영인서와 교감표점서를 편찬하였고, 본 논문에서는 교감의 과정과 성과에 대해 논하였다.
2장에서는 교감의 원칙과 교감자료에 대해 논의하였다. 『국조인물고』의 교감 원칙은 일반적인 교감 원칙을 준용하되 『국조인물고』의 중요한 두 가지 특징을 감안하여 보완되었다. 첫째, 『국조인물고』는 전기류 문헌이므로 인물 정보의 정확성과 신뢰성을 담보하는 것이 중요하다. 둘째, 저본으로 삼은 『국조인물고』 판본의 오류가 매우 많다. 이러한 특징에 따라, 인명ㆍ지명ㆍ연대와 같이 인물 정보와 밀접한 항목의 교감 지침을 더욱 구체화하였고, 실록, 법전, 방목 등을 포함한 다양하고 풍부한 교감자료 사용을 중요한 원칙으로 삼았다.
3장에서는 우선 『국조인물고』 교감주 현황 통계를 검토하고, 이어 수정주를 국역서와 대조함으로써 교감의 성과를 확인하였다. 통계에 따르면 『국조인물고』는 여타 유사한 성격의 문헌에 비해 더 많은 수의 교감이 이루어졌으며 본문까지 수정하는 수정주의 비율 역시 매우 높은 편이었다.
세종대왕기념사업회에서 수행한 『국조인물고』의 번역은 교감이 되지 않은 판본을 바탕으로 진행되었음에도 정확도가 높은 편이다. 그러나 『국조인물고』의 오류가 매우 많아 이로 인한 오역이 상당히 남아 있고, 오류를 수정한 부분에 주석이 없다는 것이 아쉬운 점이었다. 교감표점서의 수정주와 대조한 결과, 오역이 이루어진 부분의 오류를 수정하고 주석을 통해 정보를 제공함으로써 기존의 번역을 보완하는 역할을 할 수 있음을 확인하였다.
4장에서는 결론을 대신하여, 『국조인물고』 교감표점서 편찬의 의의와 활용방안에 대해 논의하였다.

영어초록

Gukjoinmulgo, a compilation of biographical data on 2,091 major figures of the Joseon dynasty who were active from the end of the Goryeo dynasty to the mid-18th century, has been recognized as an essential source for the study of the Joseon dynasty. In response, the Institute for the Translation of Korean Classics collated Gukjoinmulgo, This paper discusses the process and achievements of the collation project.
In Chapter 2, the collation principles and collation materials are discussed. The principles of Gukjoinmulgo collation conformed to the general principles of collation, but were supplemented by considering two important features of Gukjoinmulgo.
First, since Gukjoinmulgo is biographical literature, it is important to ensure the accuracy and reliability of biographical information. Second, there are many errors in the original version of the book Gukjoinmulgo. According to these distinct features, the collation guidelines for items closely related to biographical information, such as names, place names, and dates, were further refined, and the use of various collation materials, including historical records, laws, and lists of successful candidates, was made an important principle.
In Chapter 3, we first reviewed the statistics on the collation annotation status of Gukjoinmulgo and then checked the performance of collation by comparing annotations related to textual corrections with translations. The statistics show that Gukjoinmulgo has a higher number of collations than other similar literature, and the percentage of annotations related to text modification is also very high.
The translation of Gukjoinmulgo conducted by the King Sejong Memorial Project is based on an uncollated version, but the accuracy is high. However, it was disappointing that there were many errors in Gukjoinmulgo, and that there were no annotations in the parts where the errors were corrected. A comparison of the annotations in collation showed that correcting errors and providing information through annotations can play a valuable role in complementing existing translations.
Chapter 4 concludes with a discussion of the significance of the compilation of Gukjoinmulgo and how it can be utilized.
