일제하 간도 한인 사회와 불교 (Korean Society and Buddhism in Gando Province during the Japanese Colonial Period)

초록

일제시대 간도를 중심으로 다양한 불교계의 활동이 전개되었다. 크게 보면 순수한 대민교화사업과 독립운동으로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 1910년 이후 각 지역에 많은 사찰이 건립되어 운영되었지만 현재 기록으로 남아 있는 것은 그다지 많지 않다. 또한 당시의 시대상황이나 지역적 특성 등에 의해 그다지 활발하게 지속성을 지니고 전개되었다고 볼 수 없다. 대표적인 활동가로 소개한 두 분의 승려 역시 오랜 시간 간도지방을 중심으로 활동했지만 유관 기록이 많지 않아 관련자들의 증언이나 단편적인 기록 등을 종합해 복원하는데 만족하고 있다.
독립운동을 한 승려와 불교도 역시 적지 않다. 직접 무장독립운동에 참여한 사람들이 있는가 하면 후방에서 계몽, 선전, 지원 등의 사업에 헌신한 사람들도 있다. 압록강 연안의 안동(단동)현부터 도문, 연길 등 간도지역 전반에 걸쳐 이들이 활동한 흔적을 찾아볼 수 있다. 다만 많은 시간이 흐르고 기록이 연멸하여 정확한 당시의 사정을 알 수 없어서 보다 많은 사람들의 활동을 소개할 수 없었다는 점이다. 오랜 기간 거주하며 활동했다는 것은 알 수 있지만 구체적인 내역을 파악할 수 없는 난점들이 많았다. 이러한 것은 시간을 두고 지속적으로 발굴해야할 과제로 남겨두어야 할 것이다. 다만 이 지면에 소개하지 않은 수많은 無名의 관계자들에게는 미안한 마음을 표하지 않을 수 없다.
일제시대 간도지방을 중심으로 조선인들이 전개했던 불교의 양상에 대해서는 그간의 연구가 전무하다시피 했다. 그렇지만 국내의 정세 내지 간도지방의 경제적 상황의 변화에 따라 불교의 활동이 달라지고 있다는 것을 알 수 있다. 다양한 활동을 통해 대중들과 호흡하고 있었던 것이다. 또한 일본인이나 중국인들 역시 조선인을 상대로 다양한 불교활동을 전개했다. 이들에 대한 종합적인 추적과 세밀한 연구는 이후 필요한 작업 중의 하나이다. 이제 이번 학술대회를 기회로 보다 많은 사람들이 관심을 가지고 연구할 수 있는 계기가 되었으면 한다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to trace the aspects of Joseon people's Buddhist activities chiefly in Gando province during the Japanese Colonial Period.
Actually, there used to be various Buddhist activities in Gando province during the Japanese Colonial Period. And their major activity can be divided into two great ones: they are works for people's enlightenment and the independent movement.
From 1910 to 1945, many Buddhist temples were built and managed in Gando province, but the recordings of their activities are not remained at present. Owing to the situations of that times or a regional trait, their activities didn't go well vigorously and constantly as well. Even though two chief monks who led Buddhist activities played an active part chiefly in Gando province, the documents related to their activities are few today. Hence, we can only try to restore to the original state as possible by collecting related persons' evidence or bits of recordings and informations and by arranging them properly.
There were not a few monks and Buddhists who took a part in the independent movement from Japan. While some people participated in the armed independent movement, others devoted themselves to a variety of social activities such as a campaign for enlightenment, propaganda and support for the national independence, etc. However, indeed, we can trace their activities throughout Gando province ranging from the Yalu River side to Domun, Yeongil, etc. Consequently, it is really regrettable that we can't find the exact situations of that times because of the passage of time and the gradual extinction of the recordings of their activities.
We know that they participated in various activities while residing in Gando province, but we have a difficulty in tracing concrete facts of their activities. That's why we should make excavations and examine continually over a long period of time.
Joseon people's Buddhist activities chiefly in Gando province during the Japanese Colonial Period must have a pivotal influence on Korean Buddhist development. However, so far, there has been not deep study on them. But we can know that their Buddhist activities were spread in diverse aspects according to the change of domestic political conditions or the change of Gando's economic conditions. In brief, they were in harmony with the mass through various activities. On the other hand, Japanese or Chinese people also developed their Buddhist activities against Joseon people. Therefore, more comprehensive and close researches on this fact will be a hereafter task. My presentation at this conference may be an opportunity for many research workers to begin to study on this topic with more interests.
