초록

한국고전번역원에서는 한국고전총간 편찬사업을 계획․추진하고 있다. 한국고전총간 편찬사업의 핵심은 서목조사를 통해 파악한 문헌에서 중요 문헌을 선정하여 영인․교점서를 간행하여 정본을 구축하고 국가 고전DB를 구축하여 해제와 함께 서비스하는 것이다. 한국고전총간 우선 편찬 부류로 지리류를 선정하였는데 지리류 문헌의 정보성과 활용성에 착안한 것이다. 본고에서는 지리류 문헌의 분류 체계 및 편찬 사례를 검토하고, 한국고전총간 지리류의 편찬 방향을 모색하였다.
중국과 한국의 서목에서 지리류 문헌은 이른 시기부터 국가 경영에 관련된 것으로 받아들여져 다른 부류의 문헌과 구별되었다. 한국에서 지리류 문헌 편찬은 조선 개국 이래로 꾸준히 이루어졌다. 조선 전기에는 『東國輿地勝覽』으로 대표되는 일련의 관찬 지리지를 편찬하였고, 이후 조선 후기에는 시대의 변화를 반영하여 통치에 활용하려는 목적에서 『輿地圖書』 등의 편찬이 추진되었고 고종대 대규모 읍지 편찬사업이 단행되었다. 민간 부문에서도 유형원, 김정호, 오횡묵 등의 사찬 지리지가 편찬되었다. 이러한 지리지는 주로 영인의 방법으로 정리․보급되었는데, 그 과정에서 善本을 가리는 과정과 지리지 내용에 대한 교감 성과가 소략하였다. 바로 이 부분이 한국고전총간 지리류 편찬의 출발점이다.
한국고전총간 지리류는 크게 總誌와 方誌로 나누어 각 시기별 주요 문헌을 편찬대상으로 선정한다. 총지는 『新增東國輿地勝覽』, 『東國輿地志』, 『輿地圖書』, 『東輿圖誌』, 『輿圖備誌』, 『大東地志』, 『輿載撮要』의 7종을 편찬대상으로 선정하였다. 방지는 지역별 시기별로 판종, 내용의 풍부함, 체재의 정연함 등을 기준으로 선정한다.
이어서 한국고전총간 지리류 편찬의 몇 가지 문제를 검토하였다. 먼저 사본의 문제는 동일 서종 여부를 판단하기 어려운 실무적 문제와 편찬의 단계를 알기 어려운 사본을 한국고전총간으로 편찬하는 문제를 살펴 보았다. 한국 고전적의 높은 사본 비율상 편찬대상에서 사본을 모두 배제할 수는 없다. 사본은 편찬대상 선정, 저본 선정, 교감․표점서 편찬 등 각 과정상에 더욱 주의를 기울여야 할 것이다. 다음으로, 총지․방지 이외의 지리류 고전적 편찬의 문제를 살펴 보았다. 넓은 의미의 지리류 고전적에 포함되는 외국지, 산천지 등의 저술은 한국고전총간 지리류의 편찬대상이 될 수 있다. 이들 고전적에 대한 면밀한 검토와 엄정한 편찬대상 선정 과정을 통해 별도로 편찬하여야 할 것이다. 결본 자료를 타서로 보충하고 재구성하는 방안에 대해서는 관련 연구가 이루어진 바 있지만 한국고전총간은 원칙적으로 이러한 보충과 재구성을 하지 않는다. 마지막으로 개화기 지리 교과서의 문제를 살펴 보았다. 개화기 지리 교과서의 외국인 원작자, 독창적이지 않은 내용, 내용의 편향성 등 문제가 있으므로 한국고전총간의 대상이 될 수 없다고 판단하였다.

영어초록

The Institute of Translation of Korean Classics has been promoting the project for publication of 『the Comprehensive Publication of Korean Classics Collections in Classical Chinese』. The aims of this project are to select publication objects by searching the catalogues of Korean classics, publish the books of type facsimile, collation and punctuation, and building of a database with bibliographical notes. Among the categories of 『the Comprehensive Publication of Korean Classics Collections in Classical Chinese』, we chose "geographies" as the first object of publication. This was the result of considering informativity and usability. In this study, we reviewed the classifications and the cases of publishing geographies and searched the direction of compilation.
In the catalogues of China and Korea, geographies were considered to be related to administration of the country. So they were separated from others. The geographies of Korea had been published throughout the Chosen Dynasty. After publishing of 『東國輿地勝覽』, the government tried to publish geographies such as 『輿地圖書』 in order to exercise control over the country. The geographies were also published in the private sector. These geographies used to be popularized by means of facsimile, and people were careless about selecting the good version and collation of various versions. This is the starting point of publication of geographies in 『the Comprehensive Publication of Korean Classics Collections in Classical Chinese』.
The geographies in 『the Comprehensive Publication of Korean Classics Collections in Classical Chinese』 are divided into two categories, national geographies(總誌) and local geographies(方誌). Seven national geographies have been selected for compilation: 『新增東國輿地勝覽』, 『東國輿地志』, 『輿地圖書』, 『東輿圖誌』, 『輿圖備誌』, 『大東地志』, 『輿載撮要』. Local geographies will be selected based on edition(版種), richness of contents and orderliness.
We examined some issues in the compilation of geographies. First of all, we looked at the practical problems encountered in determining whether a manuscript is of the same content or not, and also considered the compilation of a manuscript that is difficult to understand in the steps of compilation. Considering the high ratio of manuscripts in Korean classics, all these manuscripts cannot be excluded from the compilation list. Again when it comes to manuscripts, more attention should be paid to each course, including selection of the compilation target, selection of the base volume(底本), and compilation of the book of collation and punctuation. Next, we looked at the problem of compilation of geographies other than national and local geographies. The writings on foreign lands, mountains and rivers can be involved in 『the Comprehensive Publication of Korean Classics Collections in Classical Chinese』. A careful review of these writings and rigorous selection process should be made separately. Although related research has been done on how to supplement and reconstruct the documents with other documents, 『the Comprehensive Publication of Korean Classics Collections in Classical Chinese』 does not, in principle, make up or reorganize the materials. Finally, we took a look at the problem of geography textbooks during the period of enlightenment. Since there are problems such as foreign originator, unoriginal contents, and bias in the contents of the book, it was decided that the textbook cannot be included in 『the Comprehensive Publication of Korean Classics Collections in Classical Chinese』.
