The Structural Time Relationship between the Rhythmical Characteristics of Minimal Music and Film Elements shown in the Film ‘Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters’

In this paper, how the structural time relationship between non-diegetic music as minimal music of Philip Glass used in the film 'Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters' and the elements of the film is formed is examined. The structural time relationship between the film and music shown in a microscopic fashion in each scene of the film are shown in three different types. First, there is the type where the screenimage has a complementary role for the metric composition of the music. Secondly, there is the type where the repetitive point of the musical rhythm pattern and the conversion points of the film elements are analyzed to have similarities in temporal structures. Thirdly, there is the type where the basic musical note units of the numbers of or the units of length of musical notes change gradually as the film unfolds. Among these three types, the case where the film shot has a relationship with the musical rhythm was most common. This has a prominent relationship with the punctuation-wise function of the music towards the film. In each separate scene as the shots develop, the rhythmical homogeneity between the screen image and music is shown. Next, the structural time relationship between the film and the music in a macroscopic fashion are shown as follows. The repetition shown in the pattern as tense flows according to each chapter is shown to be similar to the repetition of minimal music in the film. Both have a tendency to return to the past through a continuation of ruminative actions. The musical time of the film and the filmic time concept are similar in a macroscopic fashion. Such a phenomenon is the result of the tendency of the minimal music in this film to integrate all the elements of the film.
