복온공주 활옷 문양의 조형미에 관한 연구 (1) - 게슈탈트 시지각 이론을 중심으로 - (A Study on the Formative Beauty of Princess Bokon's Hwallot Pattern (1) - Focus on Gestalt's Theory of Visual Perception -)

초록

복온공주(福溫公主, 1818~1832, 순조의 차녀) 활옷의 수많은 문양은 매우 다양하고 화려하나 복잡하지 않고 안정감이 있는 조형미가 매우 뛰어난 의복으로 끊임없이 회자되어 오고 있다. 이러한 조형미가 형성된 근본적 요인은 문양들이 서로 긴밀한 관계를 통해 조화와 균형을 이루며, 단순하고 간결하게 인지하기 때문이다. 이는 게슈탈트 법칙으로 설명되며, 게슈탈트 심리학자들은 인간의 지각체계는 부분보다 전체를 먼저 인식하는데, 이는 우리의 뇌가 모든 사물을 인지할 때 단순하고 간결한 형태로 체계화하기 때문이라 하였고, 이를 게슈탈트 법칙으로 설명하였다. 이러한 구조적 체계화는 조화, 균형, 통일 등 조형미의 원리와 깊은 관련이 있따. 그러나 이러한 관점에 주안점을 둔 조형미에 관한 선행연구는 없으며, 문양의 종류, 위치, 의미 등의 분석에만 머물러 있는 실정이다.
이에 본 연구는 ‘게슈탈트 시지각 이론’의 원리를 통해 복온공주 활옷 문양에 대한 조형미의 근원적 요인을 분석하는 데 그 목적을 두었다. 게슈탈트 시지각 이론의 원리 중 본 연구에서는 공통 영역의 법칙, 초점의 법칙, 간결성의 법칙, 유사성과 공동 운명의 법칙, 연속성의 법칙을 중심으로 살펴보았으며, 근접성의 법칙은 기본 개념으로 하였다. 이를 살펴본 결과, 금사선 안의 수많은 문양들이 그룹화를 이루면서 다양한 문양들이 전체로 인식되는 요인은 공통 영역의 법칙으로 적용됨을 알 수 있었다. 또한 문양의 크기와 색의 대비를 통해 강조점을 두어 시선이 분산되지 않게 하는 요인으로는 초점의 법칙, 문양들은 다양한 요소가 어우러져 하나의 문양을 형성하고 있는데 이때 문양을 전체로 인식하는 것, 그리고 활옷 전체의 모든 요소 역시 간결성의 법칙이 적용되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 다음으로 모든 문양들은 종류별로 유사한 형태와 크기 및 방향성을 가지고 있어 서로 다른 문양들끼리도 보다 긴밀하게 그룹화를 이루는 현상은 유사성의 법칙과 공동 운명의 법칙이 동시에 적용되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 마지막으로 복온공주 활옷의 모든 문양은 그리드 시스템 위에 문양이 수놓아져 있으며, 보이지 않는 수직선 상의 문양은 하나의 그룹으로 인식하게 되는데, 연속성의 법칙이 적용되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이와 같이 게슈탈트 시지각 이론을 중심으로 고찰한 결과 복온공주 활옷에서 느껴지는 조화와 균형 그리고 통일성과 함께 간결하고 안정감 있는 조형미의 요인은 수많은 문양들이 구획선 안에서 서로 긴밀한 관계를 맺고 그룹을 형성함에 따라 구조적 형태로 인지하기 때문임을 알 수 있었다.

영어초록

The numerous patterns of Princess Bok-on (Princess 福溫 (1818-1832; the second daughter of Soonjo) Hwallot clothes are very diverse and colorful, but they are not complicated and have been talked about constantly as clothes with a great sense of stability. The fundamental factor that formed this formative beauty is that the patterns are in harmony and balance through close relationships with each other, and are recognized simply and concisely. This is explained by the Gestalt Law, and Gestalt psychologists have found that the human perception system recognizes the whole before the part because our brains systematize it in a simple and concise form when we recognize all things. This structural systematization is closely related to the principles of formative beauty such as harmony, balance, and unification. However, there are no prior studies on the formative beauty focused on this point of view, and the situation remains only in the analysis of the type, location, and meaning of the pattern.
Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the fundamental factors of the formative beauty of the pattern of Princess Bokon's Hwallot clothes through the principle of Gestalt's visual perception theory. This study focused on the laws of common areas, the laws of focus, the laws of conciseness, the laws of similarity and common destiny, and the laws of continuity among the principles of Gestalt's visual perception theory, and the law of proximity was the basic concept. As a result of examining this, it was found that as numerous patterns inside the gold wire were grouped, the factors recognized as a whole were applied as the laws of common areas. In addition, the emphasis was placed on the contrast between the size and color of the pattern to prevent the gaze from being dispersed, and the law of focus, the pattern's recognition as a whole, and the law of conciseness were applied to all elements of the Hwallot clothes. Next, it was found that the law of similarity and the law of common destiny were applied to the phenomenon of more closely grouping different patterns because all patterns have similar shapes, sizes, and directions for each type. Finally, all of the patterns of Princess Bokon's Hwallot clothing are embroidered on the grid system, and the patterns on the invisible vertical line are recognized as a group, indicating that the law of continuity is applied. As a result of examining the Gestalt visual perception theory in this way, it was discovered that the simple and stable formative beauty factor, along with the harmony, balance, and unity felt in Princess Bokon's Hwallot clothing, is recognized as a structural form as numerous patterns are closely related to each other and form a group within the compartment line.
