    This study was intended to research how an acting director of Kyujanggak, Yu Jae-Geon(1793~1880) tried to compile the middle-class culture through 4 compilations that he left behind as 』Leehyanggyeonmunlok』. As a descendant of a family of many acting directors who served as acting directors of Kyujanggak since his grandfather, Yu Sang-Woo, he consistently worked as a middle and petty official all his life. He can be referred to as 'an editor of commoners of the 19th century' who tried to promulgate the capability of middle-class culture by compiling various poetry and prose and traces of middleclass people in his own inimitable way instead of expressing himself.
    Yu Jae-Geon clearly recognized his role as an editor and maintained his own editing style rather consistently while publishing many literature collections as 『Pungyosamseon』, 『Leehyanggyeonmunlok』, 『Gogeumyeongmulgeunchesi』, and 『Gogeumbeopeoh』. While he compiled 『Gogeumbeopeoh』 and 『Gogeumyeongmulgeunchesi』, he had critical mind that the middle-class culture(Geum-now) of today is enough to be juxtaposed along with the classics(old) of China. Therefore, under the name of 'past and present,' Yu Jae-Geun appreciated poetry and prose of China of all time and of middleclass people of Joseon equally and tried to bind them comprehensively. In terms of how Yu Jae-Geon recognized the middle-class culture of 18~19th century as the 'present' of Joseon, it signifies how pride of commoners reached the peak around 1860's.
    The editor Yu Jae-Geon preferred a way of bringing the existing acknowledged frame as it is and filling in new contents there. A compilation of 『Gogeunmyeongmulgeunchesi』 using a frame of a government compilation of the Qing Period or a new composition of 『Gogeumbeopeoh』 by borrowing the format of proverbs book of Ming Dynasty are the examples. In other words, it was an attempt to embrace the entirety as the Korean identity by adding characteristics of Korea(Korean contents) on Chinese frame that partakes the typicality.
