    초록

Based on a study of rock carvings in the Chifeng area of Inner Mongolia conducted from July 28 to August 3, 2008, this researcher was able to discover new materials which may help to shed some new light on the origins of rock carvings in Korea during the prehistoric era, origins which have to date been wrapped in mystery. This study of the Chifeng area revealed the presence in Inner Mongolia of geometric-patterned rock carvings such as shield designs which had heretofore been believed to only be found in the southern areas of the Korean peninsula. These so-called "Korean-style" rock carvings were discovered amongst the relics found in sites such as Chi Jia Ying Zi(遲家營子), San Zuo Dian(三座店), Shang Ji Fang Ying Zi(上機房營子) Site, Hexigten Banner or Keshiketeng Qi(克什克腾旗), and Ge Liao Ying Zi(閣老營子). The Chi Jia Ying Zi(遲家營子), San Zuo Dian(三座店), and Shang Ji Fang Ying Zi(上機房營子) sites include relics of stone fortresses associated with the Lower Xiajiadian culture that took root in the Yinhe River basin. The Ge Liao Ying Zi(閣老營子) site is located in the Baichahe basin. In this regard, both the Yinhe and Baichahe Rivers flow into the Xiliaohe River. As such, these relics are located on the west upper reaches of the Liaohe River, which in turn is connected to the Liaodong region.
These rock carvings in Inner Mongolia were determined to be identical to those found in Korea in terms of the methods used to chisel out the rocks. However, the contents of these rock carvings can be perceived as differing from Korean rock carvings in that they revolved around animals. The present study on these Korean-style rock carvings that revolved around geometric patterns such as concentriccircles, diamond shapes, and shield shapes can be regarded to have wielded some new information about the origins of Korean rock carvings. More to the point, this study unveiled the fact that the roots of Korean rock carvings are strongly intertwined with the rock carvings found in the Chifeng area located in the upper reaches of the Xiliaohe River. The Chifeng area, which is located between steppes in Mongolia and agricultural zones in the Liaoning area can be regarded as a transitional zone that is at once agricultural and nomadic. To this end, the author of this study hopes to conduct a follow-up study that revolves around the examination of the precise path through which the rock carving culture that existed in this area was introduced to the Korean peninsula. The results of this study are expected to shed some much needed light on the contents and characteristics of Korea’s Bronze Age culture. Furthermore, these results will play an important role in the development of a better understanding of the cultural characteristics and scope of Kojosŏn.
