TV 다큐멘터리「차마고도」의 구성과 그 의미에 관한 연구 -영상과 언술의 결합양상을 중심으로- (The Study about Semantic Structure of the Text in the Documentary : The way in the Linguistic Narration and the Visual Narration are Combined)

초록

본 연구는 2008년 방송위원회 최우수 다큐멘터리 수상작인 KBS 「차마고도」 텍스트의 의미구조를 분석한 사례 연구다. 영상텍스트의 서사체계와 의미화 과정에 대한 이론적 틀을 근거로, 방송계로부터 영상의 완성도가 높은 TV 다큐멘터리라는 극찬을 받은 작품인 KBS 「차마고도」를 선택했고, 이 영상 텍스트를 통해 기존 다큐멘터리의 전통적인 서사구조와의 차별점을 파악한 후, 언술 서사와 영상 서사의 결합방식에 따른 의미생성 원리를 살펴본 것이다. 분석 방법은 전체 통합체 서사 분석을 단락으로 나누고, 영상매체로서 문자기호, 즉 TV 다큐멘터리의 여러 형식적 요소 중에 나레이션에 해당되는 부분, 그리고 영상기호 즉 도상적 기호를 숏 단위로 또는 숏의 연결 방식으로 구체화시켜 분석하였다. 보다 구체적으로 시퀀스별로 표현대상과 표현방식을 구분한 후, 표현대상이<자연><사람과 문화><자연과 사람>에 따라 표현방식이 언술과 영상이 어떻게 결합 또는 분리되었는지를 분석하였다. 그 결과 네 가지 유형으로 분류되는데 첫 번째는 언술적 표현이 최소한이거나, 전혀 언술적 표현이 없이 영상이미지만이 부각된 시퀀스, 두 번째는 영상이 언술적 기호에 대한 시각적 증거로 표현된 시퀀스, 세 번째는 정보 제공을 위한 언술적 표현과 영상이 일치하는 씬과 앞뒤 씬에 영상과 언술이 불일치하지만 영상이미지로 해석적 여지를 제공하는 씬이 복합 구성된 시퀀스다. 네 번째는 표현대상이 <자연과 사람>이고, 언술표현방식이 나레이션이 아닌 “자막”과 영상이미지가 결합하는 방식을 취하고 있다. 위의 네 가지 유형이 서사체계에 적절히 배치되어 의미를 생성하고 있음을 확인했다. 서사체계에서 의미를 생성하기 위해 영상이미지를 부각시킨 시퀀스는 표현대상인<자연>을 이야기하고자 할 때 사용되었고, 효과적인 영상구성 방식은 <고정숏>와 <숏과 숏의 연결 방식인 몽타쥬 기법>을 활용하고 있음을 확인하였다. 본 텍스트는 앞뒤 시퀀스의 인과관계를 중심으로 한 논리적인 전개구조를 띄지 않으면서 TV다큐멘터리가 의미생성을 하기 위한 조건이 무엇인지를 검증하는 사례가 될 것이다.

영어초록

This thesis analyzed the semantic structure of the text in the documentary <Ancient Tea and Horse Caravan Road>, which was produced by KBS and selected as the best documentary by Korea Broadcasting Commission in 2008. The thesis selected the KBS documentary <Ancient Tea and Horse Caravan Road> as its subject because the documentary was highly recognized based on the theoretical framework for the narrative structure of visual text and the creation of meaning. This study found out the difference of narrative structure between the existing documentary and the KBS documentary and explored the creation of meaning according to the way the linguistic narration and the visual narration are combined. In terms of the method of analysis, the narration was divided into several paragraphs. Then the linguistic sign as a visual medium or the narration as an element of TV documentary and the visual sign were analyzed by shot or the connection of shots. Furthermore, the subject and the method of expression of each sequence were classified into <nature>, <people and culture> and <nature and people>. Then the study analyzed how the narration and the image were combined or separated according to each subject of expression. As a result, the relation of the narration and the image were categorized into four types. First, the sequence which includes little or no narrative expression and focuses on the visual image. Second, the sequence where the image is used as a visual evidence for the linguistic sign. Third, the sequence where the two kinds of scenes are combined. One is the scene, where linguistic expression providing information corresponds to the image. The other one is the scene, which shows disharmony between the image and the narration but the visual image provides room for interpretation. Fourth, the sequence where the subject of expression is <nature and people> and the visual image is combined with “subtitle” instead of the narration. These four type sequences were properly organized in the narrative structure and created meaning. The sequence, which accentuated the visual image to create meaning, was used to express <nature> and the methods such as <fixed shot> and <montage- a method of juxtaposing shots> were used to effectively construct the image. This study will define the condition where a TV documentary can create meaning without logical development focusing on causal relationship of the sequences.
