롱기누스 숭고론의 시학적 전유 (Poetics of The Sublime and Longinus)

초록

This writing has its purpose in groping for the sublime concept's poetic application by critically reviewing the sublime discussion that has risen as a modern aesthetic theory from a poetic point of view.
Over a long period of time, the ancient Greeks eliminated the irrational factors of their political system and culture. They removed holiness and sentiments such as astrology, oracles, pathos and lunacy and replaced with a logos-centered rationalism. <On the Sublime> by Longinus is supposed to have been written to regain the human mind's freedom that had been repressed by such ancient rationalism. In order to achieve this, Longinus presented the origin of sublime by using sublime discourse as sublime subject and pursued the restoration of great poets represented by Homer through education. This is an important characteristic that distinguishes his theory of sublime from other ancient poetry and provided the foundation that made possible for modern aesthetics to dualize the human aesthetic judgment with beauty and sublime.
Firstly, it shows big difference from the modern sublime in the sense that it used the sublime discourse as sublime subject and for this reason, his sublime theory is very easy to exclusively possess poetry. Especially, Longinus' sublime concept includes the meaning of 'big' and 'high' and this can be interpreted as a result reflecting the ancient Greeks' mythical thinking of deciding God's power and rank with high and low. Moreover, sublime can be understood as uplift in emotion derived from the desire to overcome the limits of humans and become a bigger and higher God-like being. The pathos produced in this process especially can be a probable cause for sublime poetry in the sense that it has the same effects as the poetic language's significance being put into action that violates the existing language systems or symbolic systems.
