초록

본 논문에서는 조선후기 華嚴寺의 역사를 재구성하고 그것을 浮休系의 계파적 전통과 연관시켜 이해하였다. 먼저 壬辰倭亂과 丙子胡亂당시 慈雲處寬등 화엄사 출신의 僧軍활동을 소개하였고, 八道都摠攝을 역임한 碧巖覺性, 桂坡性能의 역할과 위상에 의해 국가 및 왕실의 후원으로 화엄사가 중건되고‘禪敎兩宗大伽藍’의 명칭을 얻게 된 사실을 살펴보았다. 이어 화 엄사의 역사 전통을 복원하기 위해 만들어진『華嚴寺事蹟』을 통해 조선후기 화엄사의 역사와 실상을 추적하였고, 서술의 오류와 인식상의 문제점을 시대적 배경과 관련하여 검토하였다. 한편 17세기 전반의 중창 佛事를 통해 화엄사가 부휴계의 주요 근거지로 자리 잡았고 양자의 결연 관계는 19세기의 圓華德柱를 이어 陳震應이 활동한 근대까지 지속되었음을 확인하였다. 또한 敎學이 성행하였던 湖南불교의 일면을 화엄사 역사에서도 도출해 보았다. 결국 조선후기 화엄사는 부휴계의 정체성을 가지면서 전통을 유지한호남 지역의 거점 사찰 중 하나였다.

영어초록

In this article, the history of the Hwaeom-sa/華嚴寺temple in the latter half period of the Joseon dynasty is reconstructed, and its relationship with the Buhyu-gyae/浮休系school’s tradition is
analyzed as well. First, the actions of the monk soldiers(僧軍) from the Hwaeom-sa temple, such as Ja’wun/慈雲Cheog’wan/處寬, during the war with the Japanese(壬辰倭亂) and the war with the Qing dynasty(丙子胡亂), are examined. Also examined is how the Hwaeom-sa temple was renovated and came to earn the honor of the ‘Great sanctuary for both the Zen and non-Zen Buddhist schools(禪敎兩宗大伽藍)’, with the support of the government and the royal family that was secured by the instrumental role that was played by Byeogam/碧巖Gakseong/覺
性and Gyaepa/桂坡Seongneung/性能, who served as the Supreme overseer of the Buddhist society of all Eight provinces(八道都摠攝).
The history of the Hwaeom-sa temple of this period is determined through the 『Hwaeom-sa Sajeok/華嚴寺事蹟(History of the Hwaeom-sa temple)』, which was created to reconstruct the
history and tradition of Hwaeom-sa. Especially analyzed are the errors in documentation and issues that seem to have originated from the very perspective behind such documentation. The
situations of the time are taken into account.
In the meantime, it is confirmed that Hwaeom-sa temple established itself as the base of activities for the Buhyu-gyae school, through the renovation efforts of the temple that
underwent in the early half of the 17th century. Also confirmed, is that the relationship between them continued through subsequent periods, which witnessed the actions of the 19th
century Buddhist priest Weonhwa/圓華Deog’ju/德柱, and later Jin Jin Eung/陳震應.
Also, the facets of the Honam region Buddhism, which saw active pursuit of the Gyohak/敎學studies, are examined in terms of the history of Hwaeom-sa. Hwaeom-sa was one of the major
Buddhist temples in the Honam region in this period and maintained the identity of a place for the Buhyu-gyae school and its tradition.
