초록

본 논문의 목적은 박은식과 정인보의 양명학을 중심으로 ‘근대 시기’ 한국 양명학의 철학적 특징을 살펴보려는 것이다. 이를 통해 개항과 일제 강점이라는 급박한 시기 한국 양명학자들의 시대인식과 대응 방법을 이해함으로써, 근대 시기에 양명학이 어떠한 기능을 하고 있는지, 그리고 그 속에 내포되어 있는 ‘근대성’은 어떠한 것인지를 확인해 보려는 것이다.
이와 같은 목적에 도달하기 위해 본 논문에서 우선 ‘근대 시기’와 ‘근대성’의 개념을 살펴볼 것이고, 나아가 우리는 ‘근대’를 ‘그 사회가 가지고 있었던 기존의 사상과 문화로부터 어떻게 새로운 방향성을 갖춘 사상과 문화가 발현되는지’를 통해 확인할 수밖에 없다는 입장을 제시할 것이다. 그리고 이와 같은 기준을 가지고 ‘근대 시기’의 한국 근대 양명학이 가지고 있는 ‘철학적 특징’과 그 ‘근대성’을 확인하려고 한다.
이러한 과정에서 가장 먼저 제시되는 것은 ‘근대 시기’ 양명학과 그 이전 시기, 즉 정제두 이후로부터 강화학파를 통해 전승되는 양명학과의 관계 및 이론적 차별성을 먼저 규명하는 것이어야 한다. 그것도 단순한 철학적 차이보다는 ‘근대성’을 확인할 수 있는 차별성을 규명하려고 했다. 이와 같은 과정에서 본 논문에서 정제두의 양명학을 봉건적 특징을 갖춘 ‘양명우파’로의 회귀로 규정하고, 이로부터 탈피되는 이론적 특징들을 ‘근대 양명학’의 ‘근대성’으로 규정하려고 시도하였다. 이와 같은 과정에서 드러난 박은식과 정인보 철학의 공통점을 우리는 ‘근대 양명학의 철학적 특징’으로 이해할 수 있을 것 같다.
그 특징은 첫째, 양명학 선택의 이유가 ‘정신’을 강조하기 위함이라는 사실이다. 이것은 당시 시대적 상황과 궤를 같이하는 것이다. 이와 같은 정신의 강조는 둘째, 양명학의 ‘간이직절’함에 초점을 맞추게 된다. 이러한 점은 양명학에서 독서공부를 인정하고 주자학에 대한 수용적 특징을 보여주는 정제두와는 차별적 특징으로 드러난다. 마지막으로 양명학의 이론적 특징 그 자체에 주목하기 보다는 ‘치양지’를 통한 이론의 적용과 확대에 더 큰 관심을 보이고 있다는 점이다. 특히 이러한 적용과 확대는 ‘성인됨’과 같은 개인의 수양차원이 아니라 종교 운동으로 이어지거나 또는 ‘민중의 복리 증진’과 같은 실천성을 강조하는 쪽으로 이행된다. 우리는 이와 같은 철학적 특징들 속에서 한국 양명학의 ‘근대성’을 확인할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this essay is to investigate philosophical feature of Korea Yangming period modern, focused on Yangming of Jeong In-bo and Park Eun-shik. Through this working, by understanding an era-recognition and ways of response of scholars of Korea Yangming school during the Japanese occupation of Korea, I am going to identify, what function do philosophy of Yangming work modern time, and what is ‘modernity’ in which is involved its function.
To reach to an end like a this, in the first place, in this essay, I will inquire into a concept of ‘modern time’ and it of ‘modernity’, and then, will show a point of view that we must identify ‘modern’ through ‘how manifested an idea and culture which is satisfied new direction from the existing an idea and culture that the society has had’. And in a criterion like this, I will identify ‘philosophical characteristic’ and the ‘modernity’ which Korea modern philosophy of Yangming has.
In this course, that which is presented the first is to examine closely relation of philosophy of Yangming and theoretical distinction, which is transmitted from philosophy of Yangming and the former time, after Jeong Je-doo to Kang-hwa School. I examined distinction which could identify ‘modernity’ than a simple philosophical distinction. In this like course, I stipulated in this essay that Jeong Je-doo’s philosophy of Yangming is regression to Yangming’s right wing that is satisfied conservative characteristics, tried to stipulate theoretical characteristics freed itself from this as ‘modernity’ of ‘modern philosophy of Yangming’. We may consider a common feature point of Park Eun-shik and Jeong In-bo philosophy revealed in this like course as ‘philosophical characteristic of modern philosophy of Yangming’.
The characteristic, firstly, is a fact that reason which selects philosophy of Yangming is to emphasize ‘mind’. This is to have the same way of doing something ,at that time, with a situation of the time. Emphasis of mind like this, secondly, is focused on the ‘simple-clear-straight-fitting’ of philosophy of Yangming. This point comes down discriminative characteristic with Jeong Je-doo that confirms reading-study in philosophy of Yangming, shows receptive characteristic about Neo Confucianism. Finally, the characteristic is point that it show interest in the application and extension of theory through ‘Realizing Innate Good Knowing(致良知)’.
Especially, this application and extension is not individual cultivation of his mind like ‘be a saint’, but gets joined on a religious movement, or is transferred emphasizing practicability. In characteristics like this, we can identify ‘modern’ of Korea philosophy of Yangming.
