내면화된 폭력과 서사의 분열－이문구의 『장한몽』 (Internalized Violence and Split of the Narrative－“Janghanmong” by Lee, Mun-gu)

초록

이 논문은 이문구의 『장한몽』을 ‘폭력’을 중점에 두고 분석하였다. 『장한몽』은 이문구의 초기 소설의 특성이 집약되어 있는 작품으로, 그의 초기 소설은 이후 소설과는 현저하게 다른 특성을 보인다. 농촌의 현실을 해학적인 문체로 탁월하게 포착한 이후 소설과는 달리 이문구의 초기 소설은 도시와 폭력을 다룬 작품이 주조를 이룬다. 『장한몽』은 초기 소설과 이후 소설의 분기점으로 이 작품에 나타난 폭력의 양상은 작가의 개인적 이력 및 현대사의 전개와 밀접하게 맞닿아 있다. 『장한몽』에는 국가나 제도에 의해 행해지는 공적 폭력과 개인들이 행하는 사적 폭력이 함께 그려진다. 핵심은 이 두 가지 폭력이 구분되지 않는다는 것이다. 공적 폭력이 갖추어야 할 공동체 구성원간의 합의나 합리적인 절차가 무시됨으로써 공적 폭력은 사실상 개인적인 원한이나 이득에 따라 행해지는 사적 폭력과 다를 바 없는 성격을 띠고 있다. 이로 인해 원칙과 규범은 힘을 잃고 시스템에서 배제된 개인들은 폭력을 내면화하게 된다. 이러한 사회에서 개인이 행사하는 폭력은 공적 폭력의 행태와 뒤엉켜 연쇄적 폭력의 형태를 띠게 된다. 이는 우리 현대사의 핵심적인 문제였으며, 『장한몽』은 합리적인 공적 폭력의 부재로 인해 일그러진 개인의 문제를 탁월하게 포착한 작품이다. 이후 이문구는 도시를 떠나 농촌과 노동의 세계를 선택하며 자신의 작품세계에서 폭력을 제거한다. 공적 폭력으로 인해 참사를 겪은 개인적 이력이 초기 소설의 폭력을 주조하였다면, 그 상흔이 너무 깊었기 때문에 농촌과 노동에서 대안을 찾았다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

The central theme of this paper is the violence in “Janghanmong” written by Lee, Mun-gu. In “Janghanmong”, we can find all the peculiarities of Lee’s early novels which are apparently different from his later novels. In his later novels, the reality of the rural community was captured with the excellency of humorous style, while his early novels are dominated by the problems of the city and the violence. In this sense, the novel “Janghanmong” can be viewed as the turning point of his literature. The features of the violence in “Janghanmong” is closely related both to the personal history of the author and to the recent history of the Korean society. In this novel, both kinds of violence are described together: the public violence done by the country and the social system, and the private violence done by the individuals. The point is that these two are not divided. The agreement or the rational procedure, which are the basic foundation of the public violence, had been disregarded so that the public violence bore the same property of the private violence done after the private enmity and interest. In this situation, the principles and the social norms have no power and the individuals excluded from the system internalize the violence in themselves. In this society, the private violence are entangled with the public violence and they altogether form a chain of the violences, which was one of the crucial problems in the recent history of Korean society. “Janghanmong” exceedingly captured this problem of the distorted individuals produced by the society void of the rational public violence. In his later novels, Lee, Mun-gu leaves the city and go to the society of the rural area and the labour, by which remove the violence in his novels. The personal career which were damaged by the public violence was the source of the problem of the violence dominating his early novels. The scars were so deep that he could not but look for the alternatives in the rural life and the labour.
