초록

본 논문은 셰익스피어의 문제극 『자에는 자로』와 그 극 속 등장인
물을 조망한 빅토리아 조 시인 윌리엄 테니슨의 ‘마리아나’와 라파엘
전파 화가들이 재현한 ‘마리아나’를 통해 셰익스피어 문학에 대한 후대
예술가들의 연정과 문학과 그림의 상호텍스트성을 연구한 것이다. 테
니슨의 ‘마리아나’나 라파엘 전파 화가들이 재현한 ‘마리아나’는 자신을
버린 연인이 돌아오기만을 하릴없이 기다리는 여인의 심리적 상태에
대한 묘사이다. 그들이 이 극의 여주인공인 이사벨라 대신 마리아나를
작품의 소재로 택한 것은 여성의 순결과 같은 도덕이나 미덕을 노래하
기 보다는 개인의 격렬한 감정과 고립, 외로움 등을 노래한 낭만주의적
경향 때문이다. 하지만 이런 광의적인 문화 취향 아래에서도 계급이나
성별에 따른 층화된 차이를 엿볼 수 있다. 그래서 남성 화가들은 빅토
리아 중산층 여성의 수동적이고 폐쇄된 삶을 마리아나에 담아내고 있
고, 그들을 다소 에로틱하게 재현함으로써 성적 탐닉의 대상으로 재현
하고 있는 반면 여성 화가들은 자유와 해방의 가능성을 지닌 여성으로
재현하고 있음을 알 수 있다.

영어초록

Alfred Lord Tennyson and the Pre-Raphaelite painters
represented Mariana, a minor character in Shakespeare's dark
comedy, Measure for Measure in their arts. Mariana is forsaken by
her fiance, Angelo after she lost her dowry in a shipwreck that
killed her brother. She reunites with his lover happily in the end of
the play thanks to her unchanged love.
Tennyson and the Pre-Raphaelite painters depicted Mariana
driven to despair from her lost love. Neither Tennyson nor Millais
gave any clue that she will reunited with Angelo happily. In
Tennyson's poem, Mariana tantalized by the deferred hope of
Angelo's return is withering in an abandoned farmhouse. As in his
other poems, Tennyson was interested in the melancholy and
loneliness of the deserted woman, not in the overall plot of the play.
The poem got rid of all action or narrative movement and focused
on an extended visual depiction of Mariana's melancholy isolation.
All of the descriptions of the physical world serve to express
Mariana's psychological state. Tennyson's 'Mariana' includes lots of
general characteristics of Romanticism; strong emotion and morbid
sensibility.
The Pre-Raphaelites called as poetic painters were fascinated by
Tennyson's morbid sensibility. Therefore many of them represented
Mariana based on Tennyson's poem. Millais' s ‘Mariana’ is a literal
illustration of Tennyson's ‘Mariana’. Mariana stands in the middle of her gorgeously-decorated but claustrophobic room. Richly clad and
mature Mariana represents the enclosed life of a Victorian middle
class woman. Unlike Millais Rossetti painted Mariana based on IV. i
of Shakespeare's Measure for Measure. However his Mariana is
also locked in the claustrophobic room, embroidering like Millais's
Mariana. Both paintings shared the common cultural tastes of
Victorian male painters. On the contrary, Marie Spartali Stillman, a
female Pre-Raphaelite suggests the possibility of freedom through
the open window.
In conclusion, Shakespeare has provided later artists with infinite
inspiration. His works have served as the most important cultural
contents to reproduce another artistic works endlessly. And they
have the infinite capability to contain the cultural tastes of any ages
and any groups.
