A Study on Trends of Chinese Studies in Korea: Chinese Poetry

This article was written to review the research trends and academic performance of the Chinese poetry field that have been accumulated in Korea from 2000 to 2012. The search condition of Chinese poetry sector to be discussed herein was limited from Pre-Qin 先秦 to Pre-Modern 前近代 and path to the release of research results was limited to dissertations, domestic journals, and books. Searching, Research Information Sharing Service (RISS) of Korea Education and Research Information Service was used as the framework. Based on the above conditions, the prominent feature in the research of Chinese classical poetry since 2000 can be summarized as follows. First, traditional research methods introduced from Taiwan and Japan are being used appropriately in dissertations etc. Second, a lot of subjects of the macroscopic perspective studying concepts and theories passing through the whole of Chinese classical poetry emerged that are not limited to one era or one individual. Third, the way of approaching several works and poets with a common denominator, ‘similar poetic tendency’ is found. Fourth, trans-genre research trends to focus on exchange of Chinese Poetry and nearby areas emerged. Fifth, one of the features is the research trend to examine the special role of the poetry area in Chinese character culture of East Asia. Finally, even if professional educational books and translations are not enough, many books aiming at academic popularization have been published since 2000. I took the place of the conclusions with the suggestion to establish a professional society responsible for Chinese classical poetry as soon as possible and propose to look out for ‘empowerment of learning’ committed under the guise of ‘crossover’.
