한국어 피동문에 나타나는 격 교체의 비대칭성에 대하여 (On the Asymmetry of Case Alternation in Korean Passives)

이 논문은 한국어 접사피동문과 ‘-어지다’ 피동문에 나타나는 격 교체의 비대칭성에 관한 통사론적 분석을 제시한다. 피동접사 파생에 의한피동문은 소유물 논항의 주격과 목적격 교체를 허용하지만, ‘-어지다’ 피동문은 주격만을 허용한다. 이러한 격교체의 비대칭성은 피동접사와 ‘-어지다’의 하위범주화 자질에 의해 설명된다. 즉, 피동접사는 어근구나 vP 에 병합되지만, ‘-어지다’는 어근구와만 병합할 수 있다. 피동접사와 병합하는 목적격 인가 vP 투사의 존재는 피동접사 피동문에 나타나는 목적격의 존재를 설명해준다. 한편, 일부 한국어 피동접사 피동문은 ‘-어지다’피동문과는 대조적으로 그 주어가 행위주성 자질을 가진다. 행위주 주어의 피동접사 피동문은 그 내부논항이 행위주 주어의 의미역 위치로 이동을 경험하는 재귀구문으로 분석된다. 피동접사의 이러한 형태론적 실현은 내부논항의 이동을 결부하는 비대격적인 통사구조에 삽입된다는 공통점을 가진다. 피동접사의 분포는 피동사의 통사론적 접근 방식에 의하여 원리적으로 설명될 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper presents a syntactic analysis of Korean passives which exhibit asymmetries of case alternation depending on the types. Korean passive constructions are derived in two ways, by attaching to passive derivational suffixes or to an '-ecita' construction. Passive constructions by passive derivational suffixes allow presence of accusative case marking; for instance, a possessum argument in possessive passive can surface with accusative marking. However, in those with '-ecita', accusative case marking is systematically banned,only nominative case marking being allowed. This paper argues that the non-active functional head Voice, which is realized as a passive derivational suffix at PF, can merge with a Root phrase or with a νP,whereas the Voice head, realized as '-ecita', only takes a Root phrase complement. The presence of a ν head, embedded within Voice,explains the availability of accusative case marking in derivational passive constructions. In addition to this, some derivational passive constructions, passives with accusative-marked possessum arguments in particular, have agentive sentential subjects, in sharp contrast to the case of '-ecita' constructions. This paper argues that those derivational constructions are analyzed as reflexive constructions in which internal arguments are raised to Spec/VoiceP positions, agent theta-positions,adopting Hornstein(1999, 2001)'s movement theory of control. Korean derivational passive suffixes as such can appear in several types of syntactic contexts such as passives, inchoatives, and reflexives, but those contexts are argued to be subsumed under having one commune syntactic property, that is, a property of involving movement of internal arguments. Such syncretism of Korean passive morphemes can be principally captured only under the syntax-driven approach to passive verb forms, which, in turn, shows the superiority of the syntax-driven approach(i.e. the Distributive Morphology) to an alternative lexicalist approach.
