에드 루샤의 아티스트 북 분석: 바타이유의 비정형이론을 중심으로 (A Study on the Artist’s Books of Ed Ruscha: in the Perspective of Bataille’s Theory of Formless)

초록

This is a study on the artist’s books of Edward Joseph Ruscha IV, which was published from 1962 to 1972. Since the early 1960s, Ruscha considered the commercial cultures and the representations of capitalistic expenditure in Los Angeles, the materials for his painting and artist books. However, while his paintings had been highly evaluated as the representative works for American West Coast Pop Arts, the study about a series of artist books was finally taken into consideration in 1990s.
Yve-Alain Bois, a best-known post-modernist, examined Ruscha’s artist books applied to Bataille’s notion of the formless on an exhibition of ≪L’Informe: Moded’emploi≫. Since the exhibition was organized with the intention of establishing the formless as a new critical term in modern art, it was a great opportunity to resurface Ruscha’s artist books on the academic studies and art criticism. In the process of analyzing the artist books, however, Bois attempted to illustrate the idea of the formless with entropy. I believe that the intervention of entropy on Bataille’s discussion is misleading his essential theory, for the reason that Bois used the words of excess and expenditure in Bataille’s theory of ‘General Economy’ mixed with these on entropy. Accordingly, this paper begins with criticizing about Bois analysis on the artist books with an absence of a big picture of Bataille’s theory, but merely with superficial aspects of the formless.
With an analysis of his works, I intend to describe the cityscape of Los Angeles which was re-displayed on the photograph as the space excessively with expenditure. The iconic architecture that Ruscha captured indicates a skeptical point of view about an integrated urban system, and the useless area reveals that the optimistic conviction for production turned out to be fictitious. In addition, authorities, violence and suppressions are observed or, on the contrary, the existence that voluntarily resists against standard practice found on his photographs. That is, the urban space that he reproduced deals with the whole social phenomenon exposing the desire for expenditure. Ruscha hoped that the viewers would privately own the public space with production at the core by reenacting the scenery of Los Angeles mingled with the images representing expenditure.
Ultimately, this paper focuses upon the reference to a correlation between the contemporary socio-cultural phenomenon, within its corresponding range, and artist books, by applying Bataille’s formless in to the concept of expenditure.
